Scouting Fairfield Men's Lacrosse
Fairfield men's lacrosse earned the No. 1 seed and right to host the CAA Championship during the final regular season weekend as the Stags ended 9-5 overall and 4-1 in league play with a 5-4 win over Hofstra on Friday, April 24. The Stags' win coupled with Towson's loss sent the No. 1 spot to Fairfield in its first year competing in the CAA.

Tristan Sperry continues to lead the way with 20 goals and 23 assists for a team-best 43 points. He also has 33 groundballs on the year, the most among CAA attackmen. TJ Neubauer (29 goals, three assists) and Colin McLinden (12 goals, 20 assists) add 32 points apiece as the squad outscores foes, 136-103 on the year with 213 points to 167 for the opposition.

Tyler Behring stepped between the pipes against UMass-Lowell midway through the season and has not relinquished goalie duties since. He holds a 6-1 record, with the lone loss an 8-7 defeat against No. 16 Towson, with a 5.95 goals-against average and .645 save percentage over 443 minutes in the cage.

Andy Copelan is in his ninth season as the head coach of Fairfield men's lacrosse and 11th overall as a program leader, including two at Marist College. Copelan is 58-36 with the Stags and 82-55 during his collegiate head coaching career.

Last Meeting: Fairfield 10, Massachusetts 9; April 4, 2014
UMass had its furious fourth quarter rally fall one goal shy of tying late as the Minutemen dropped a 10-9 decision to Fairfield at McGuirk Stadium. Buddy Carr led eight from the Maroon and White in the scoring column with two goals.

The Stags made use of a five-goal run covering the close of the first half and entire third quarter to turn a 4-3 deficit into an 8-4 advantage entering the final frame. Nick Mariano snapped the UMass drought when he bested Fairfield goalie Tyler Behring with a shot 10 yards out from the right post. After Mariano's goal at the nine-minute, 43-second mark of the fourth, the Minutemen poured in four more tallies in the next six minutes and 51 seconds of game action.

Carr ended the streak with back-to-back scores, the final of which brought UMass within 10-9 of Fairfield with nearly three minutes to play in the game. Neither side was able to find the back of the net again during the remainder of play while Neubauer and Charlie Schnider kept the Minuteman rally at bay with a goal each in the fourth during UMass' run of offensive success.

UMass In The CAA Championship
UMass men's lacrosse makes its fifth appearance in the CAA Championship during six years with the league. The Minutemen joined the CAA ahead of the 2010 season and won the league title in 2012. The squad has another appearance in the championship game in 2011 and exited the tournament in the semifinal round during 2010 and 2013. Their five appearances stand tied with Drexel (2010, 2012-15) and Towson (2010, 2012-15) for the most in the span. The Maroon and White own a 3-3 all-time record in the event.

More on the Minuteman program is available through UMassAthletics.com.

Matt Vautour of the Daily Hampshire Gazette has a preview of this weekend's Atlantic 10 Championship where the UMass women's lacrosse team is the No. 1 seed. The Minutewomen have won six consecutive league titles and will face George Mason on Friday (1 PM) in the A-10 Semifinals.

"I really like how our team has performed in the bigger game scenarios. Sometimes the more pressure for us the better," Head Coach Angela McMahon said. "We have key players who have thrived in those moments. From the beginning our defense was strong and solid, the way our offense has come together and the number of different people who have become scoring threats is great. That's huge for us going forward."

Matt Vautour of the Daily Hampshire Gazette has a story on Jean Sifrin as the NFL Draft approaches later this week. Vautour's feature focuses on the process of preparing for the draft and the media exposure Sifrin has received. Sifrin says he is excited about the draft, but is more anxious to find out what team he could be playing for so he can begin preparing for pre-season camp as soon as possible.

Bleacher Report has an in-depth feature on UMass football tight end Jean Sifrin as he prepares for the 2015 NFL Draft. The production crew spent several days with Jean and the UMass football program prior to the Minutemen's NFL Pro Day event at McGuirk Stadium.

Jean Sifrin is 27 and hoping to be a sleeper pick in this year's NFL draft. He ran an uninspiring 4.84 40-yard dash at the combine and needed to impress scouts at his pro day if he was going to have any chance of getting drafted.

At 23, Sifrin was scouted playing flag football, and three years later he found his way onto the University of Massachusetts roster. In his only D-I season, the 6'5", 245-pound tight end caught 41 balls for 637 yards and six touchdowns. He's now on the fringes of being drafted, but his age and speed are holding him back.

Making it to the NFL would mean providing a better life for his eight-year-old son, Jabari. Can Sifrin impress his way onto a roster?

Peter Cappiello of the Boston Globe has a feature story on UMass women's lacrosse midfielder Hannah Murphy who is having a break-out campaign for the Minutewomen in 2015. Head coach Angela McMahon says the Duxbury, Mass., native may be one of the overall best players the Minutewomen have had over the past several years.

Joey Saade of the Daily Collegian has a feature story on UMass lacrosse goalie Rachel Vallarelli who has turned in a phenomenal senior campaign in net for the Minutewomen this year. The anchor of the nation's No. 1 defense for much of the year talks about what her career has meant to her, while teammate Morgan Walker says Vallarelli's play has inspired the team's defense as a whole.
With the NFL Draft coming this weekend, Dan Malone of MassLive.com takes a look at where Jean Sifrin could likely be drafted. While no other Minutemen are likely to be drafted, Stanley Andre does have a strong chance of being picked up as a free agent. Malone also looks ahead to next year as several Minutemen are potential Draft prospects including Tajae Sharpe, Blake Frohnapfel, Jovan Santos-Knox and Randall Jette.

Philip Sanzo of the Daily Collegian had a season recap of the UMass tennis season and the success the Minutewomen had. Judy Dixon talks about how special the group was and how the program has now set higher expectations for 2015-16 after the past season.

Minutemen In Major League Lacrosse Update (April 27, 2015)

A trio of former Minutemen were in action for the Boston Cannons during their heartbreaking 12-11 overtime loss to Charlotte Sunday. Jim Connolly (2006-07, '09) and Will Manny (2010-13) had three points on two goals and an assist while Ryan Hollenbaugh (2010-13) rotated into the lineup but didn't record statistics.

After Charlotte controlled the first quarter en route to a 5-1 lead entering the second, Connolly and Manny combined to bring Boston back into contention. Connolly scored back-to-back after Charlotte made it 6-1, with an assist credited to Manny on the second one. Manny added a tally of his own from a pass by Connolly to complete scoring in the quarter and bring Boston back within 6-5. Manny added his second of the night during the fourth quarter rally as the Cannons forced overtime after trailing by four entering the final frame.

The Minutewomen got a great performance from Caroline Raymond in game one but fell 1-0 on a walk-off home run, before suffering a 6-0 loss in the second game. UMass is in sixth place entering the final week of the regular-season with the top six teams qualifying for the A-10 Championship, held next week at UMass.

Former Massachusetts men's basketball standout and nationally recognized coach Al Skinner was named the head coach at Kennesaw State over the weekend.

Skinner was a three-year letterman at UMass from 1971-74 after playing on the freshman team in 1970. He was a 3-time all-Yankee Conference pick and a Honorable Mention All-America choice as a senior 1973-74. He finished his career with 1,235 points, 749 rebounds and 320 assists in 79 games. The native of West Hampstead, N.Y. was inducted into the UMass Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982, and his No. 30 jersey was retired by the Minutemen on Feb. 18, 2004.

Kennesaw State will hold a press conference inside the Hospitality Suite of the KSU Convocation Center on Tuesday (April 28) to introduce Skinner. The press conference will begin at 11 a.m. (ET) and streamed live at www.ksuowls.com.

Last Meeting: Delaware 15, Massachusetts 7; April 25, 2014
Nick Mariano scored three goals and Connor Mooney provided two more, but the UMass was unable to overcome a strong start by Delaware in a 15-7 loss to the Blue Hens. Mariano finished the game with five points courtesy of two assists to go with his fifth career hat trick. Mooney also helped out on a pair of goals.

Delaware loss dropped Massachusetts to 7-6 on the season and 1-4 in CAA games to end the 2014 campaign. After the Blue Hens scored twice and UMass answered with two more of its own, Delaware put the game out of reach with a four-goal run that spanned into the fourth quarter.

Scouting Drexel Men's Lacrosse
Hindered by a slow start to its season, Drexel sits at 6-6 overall with a 2-1 record in CAA play entering competition at Massachusetts. The Dragons faltered in each of their first four contests during 2015, but rebounded with wins in four of the previous five and six of the last eight overall. In his sixth year, Brian Voelker leads the team as head coach one campaign removed from advancing the team to the NCAA Quarterfinals.

Ryan Belka's 42 points paves the way on offense. Belka splits his scoring between team-highs in goals (25) and assists (17) while Cole Shafer follows with 30 points on 22 goals and eight assists. This dynamic duo owns 72 of the team's 159 points for a 45.3 percent share of the total scoring output.

Will Gabrielsen started at goalie in the opening four games, but only provided a .392 save percentage with a 13.68 goals-against average. His replacement, Jimmy Joe Granito spearheads the resurgent Drexel defense with a .556 save percentage and 7.36 goals-against average. Granito is 6-2 on the year over 481 minutes in net.

Last Meeting: Drexel 13, No. 14 UMass 9; April 12, 2014
Connor Mooney led the offense with five points on three goals and a pair of assists while Grant Consoletti earned a single-game personal best four points via a pair of goals and as many assists, but UMass dropped a 13-9 decision at Drexel. James Fahey provided four caused turnovers and as many groundballs as the Minuteman defense forced 12 Drexel turnovers in-total, tied for the most UMass created in one game during the 2014 season.

Drexel produced five goals during the pivotal fourth quarter after the Minutemen entered the final frame within one of tying, 8-7. Belka started a streak of three consecutive tallies for the Dragons, who entered the game receiving votes in the USILA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Top-20, with 13 minutes, six seconds left in the game.

Consoletti broke up the Drexel run at the nine minute, eight second mark of the fourth with his second score earned during play. His goal brought UMass within 11-8 of tying, but back-to-back tallies for the Dragons sealed the contest.
