University of Massachusetts alumna Tamara Tatham and the Canadian National Team won each of their opening four games at the 2015 FIBA Americas Championship and claimed the top spot in Group A as a result. They defeated Puerto Rico, 94-57 on Aug. 9, followed with a 93-36 victory over Chile the next day and added dominant wins over the Dominican Republic, 111-36 and Cuba, 92-43, on Aug. 11 and 12, respectively.
Tatham has been productive through four games and averages 9.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists per appearance. She is shooting an efficient 52.2 percent from the floor (12-of-23) and nearly automatic at the foul line (10-of-12; 83.3 percent). Canada faces Brazil in the semifinals on Saturday, Aug. 15.

University of Massachusetts women's basketball incoming freshman Stephanie Foukaris is currently competing for her home country, Cyprus, at the FIBA U18 European Championships. University of Massachusetts women's basketball alumna Tamara Tatham wrapped up a successful European exhibition tour with the Canadian National Team on June 5. Tatham was paramount to the team's success as she averaged 7.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game starting over the six-game slate, which included four victories. The only losses Tatham and the Canadian side suffered were to No. 3 internationally ranked Spain and No. 4 France.

University of Massachusetts women's basketball alumna Tamara Tatham helped Team Canada to two victories over three games during the first half of the Canadian National Program's current European tour.
Tatham averaged 5.3 points with 2.0 rebounds and as many steals per game during the victories over Poland and Great Britain as well as the loss to No. 3 internationally ranked Spain.

Scouting Richmond Women's Basketball
Richmond women's basketball enters the Atlantic 10 Tournament as a No. 5 seed with a 17-12 overall record. The squad earned a bye through the first round and Thursday's contest marks the first for the Spiders during the championship.
Janelle Hubbard's 14.1 points guides the offense as one of three Spiders scoring in double-figures. Lauren Tolson adds 12.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists over a team-high 31.9 minutes played per game. Genevieve Okoro follows with 11.4 points and a Spiders-best 8.1 rebounds.
Michael Shafer is in his 10th season as the head coach at Richmond after an 11-year stint as an assistant at the University of Georgia, during which the Bulldogs reached the NCAA Tournament in each season. Shafer is 174-139 overall with the Spiders and led the team to five WNIT appearances from the 2008-09 season through 2012-13.

Scouting St. Bonaventure Women's Basketball
St. Bonaventure's up-and-down regular season ended with the Bonnies at 15-14 overall and 5-11 in the Atlantic 10, which earned SBU the No. 12 seed in the conference championship and a first round meeting with the Minutewomen. After they started 11-3, the Bonnies fell in seven consecutive contests prior to a 77-57 win over UMass in the Mullins Center. St. Bonaventure balanced its play over the final six games following the victory over the Minutewomen and tallied three wins as a result.
Katie Healy's 14.0 points per game paves the way in 2014-15. Nyla Reuter adds 10.8 to the mix while Hannah Little chips in 9.2 on average. Healy also paces St. Bonaventure in rebounding (6.4) ahead of Little's 6.0 per game.
Opponents outscored St. Bonaventure by one points during the 29-game regular season, 1,739-to-1,738 for a 60.0-to-59.9 lead in the category. The Bonnies were outrebounded despite Healy and Little's efforts on average, 38.1-to-35.7 while foes had fewer turnovers, 442-417 and more assists, 343-315.
Last Meeting: St. Bonaventure 77, Massachusetts 57; Jan. 31, 2014
UMass started strong against St. Bonaventure at home, but could not keep pace down the stretch in a 77-57 loss. Kim Pierre-Louis paced the Minutewomen with 14 points while Emily Mital chipped in 10 more to go with a team-best four assists.
Shooting accuracy in all facets of the game buoyed St. Bonaventure. Nyla Reuter and Gabby Richmond combined for 40 points as the duo finished 12-for-20 on field goals and 12-of-12 at the line. As a team, St. Bonaventure hit 45.1 percent of its attempts from the floor (23-of-51) and went 23-of-30 on foul shots (76.7 percent).
For matchup purposes against a smaller St. Bonaventure lineup, UMass switched its starters for the first time this season. Mital served as the No. 3, Timbilla moved to forward and Pierre-Louis started at center in place of Kymber Hill.
Once UMass closed within 25-22, St. Bonaventure answered with eight of the final 10 points in the first half for a 32-24 advantage at the break. The Bonnies continued to roll early in the second half and built their lead to as much as 26 points.
Seven quick points on a Pierre-Louis jumper, Alyx Stiff three-pointer and Rashida Timbilla layup cut the deficit 64-45 with 5:26 remaining, but Massachusetts was unable to edge closer than within 19 until the final minute of play.
UMass In The Atlantic 10 Tournament
The 2014-15 edition of the Atlantic 10 Tournament marks UMass' 31st time participating in the event. The Minutewomen hold an all-time record of 12-30. Massachusetts is 3-2 versus St. Bonaventure in A-10 tournaments, but has only faced the Bonnies once (L, 63-60; March 2, 2007) since four consecutive meetings during the 1988-91 Atlantic 10 tournaments.
This is the second instance of the Minutewomen participating as a No. 13 seed after UMass dropped an 85-75 decision in overtime to No. 12 George Mason in the 2014 Atlantic 10 Tournament Play-In Game. The deepest run the program ever made in the tournament is into the semifinal round, which UMass has accomplished six times - lastly during the 2002 holding of the event.

Scouting Rhode Island Women's Basketball
Rhode Island women's basketball has sustained its resurgent season since the last meeting between these sides, as the Rams hold a 16-11 overall record and 8-7 mark in Atlantic 10 games. Standout freshman Charise Wilson leads the charge with a team-best 16.0 points per game, the most among rookies in the league and the only Ram currently scoring in double-figures.
Wilson is 149-of-402 from the field (37.1 percent), including 54-of-173 on threes (31.2 percent). She has gone 80-of-108 at the foul line (74.1 percent) through 27 games as well and leads the team in assists (72) and steals (50). The Rams have earned their positive record despite being outscored and outrebounded by slim margins. Foes hold a 58.3-to-57.4 margin in the points column and 42.1-to-37.1 edge on the boards.
Daynia La-Force is in her first season with the program after eight years spearheading the Northeastern women's basketball team. La-Force is 128-172 as a head coach, which also includes one season at NCAA Division II-level New Haven in 2005-06.
Last Meeting: Rhode Island 70, Massachusetts 58; Feb. 4, 2014
Emily Mital knocked down five three-pointers and Cierra Dillard scored a team-high 16 points, but the Minutewomen was unable to keep pace with Rhode Island in the second half during a 70-58 loss at the Ryan Center.
UMass started the second half with makes by Dillard and Rashida Timbilla to extend the Minutewomen lead to 34-26, but the Rams rallied with 10 straight points - all of which came from Tabakman and Wilson as the duo alternated conversions.
The Maroon and White went back in front, 39-38 with nine minutes, 41 seconds left in the game after a Kim Pierre-Louis put-back layup and Dillard trey, one of the season-high 10 three-pointers UMass made. Those 10 triples represent the most recorded in a single game since UMass also had 10 against Kent State on Nov. 10, 2012 - a span of 79 games between the outings.
However, Rhode Island replied with an 11-0 run for a 49-39 lead at the 6:48 mark - again spearheaded by Tabakman and Wilson. The Minutewomen could not move closer than within six of tying the remainder of the way.

Scouting VCU Women's Basketball
Virginia Commonwealth University sits at 14-12 overall and 5-8 in Atlantic 10 Conference play ahead of hosting UMass women's basketball for a Sunday, Feb. 22 contest in Richmond, Va. VCU is guided by first-year head coach Beth O'Boyle, who brought six years of experience as a program leader with her to the Rams, including three seasons at NCAA Division-I Stony Brook (2011-14) and three more at D-III Montclair State (2004-07).
Balanced offense, with seven from VCU averaging at least five points per game, helps the Rams in 2014-15. Isis Thorpe spearheads the team effort with 11.8 points per game and Adaeze Alaeze scores 10.9 more. Alaeze also provides a squad-best 6.7 rebounds on average. VCU only outscored opponents by a combined five points, 1,629-1,624, through 26 games. Foes put up more points in the first half, 801-778, but the Rams rebound in the second stanza for a 851-823 margin.
VCU started the season 12-5 and won three of their opening four league contests, but the Rams have struggled since their 62-53 win over Davidson. After that victory, Virginia Commonwealth University dropped seven of the following nine contests, including five consecutive entering play against UMass.

Scouting Davidson Women's Basketball
Davidson women's basketball has struggled in its first season as a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference as the Wildcats are 5-20 overall and 1-11 in league play ahead of a Wednesday, Feb. 18 game at the Mullins Center. Davidson previously competed in the Southern Conference, where the squad reached the league's 2014 championship game under now-fifth-year head coach Michele Savage. Last season, the Wildcats went 16-16 overall and 11-7 in Southern Conference games while Savage is 79-76 overall as the program leader.
Hannah Early's 14.2 points per game paces the program, but the squad is outscored on average, 68.5-to-56.6 for a -11.9 scoring margin, the worst in the Atlantic 10. Mackenzie Latt, a freshman, has made an immediate impact alongside Early, who is junior. Latt chips in 11.3 points and a team-high 8.4 rebounds per game.
Turnovers have hurt the Wildcats in 2014-15, as the squad has coughed up possession 483 times - the most in the Atlantic 10 and 26 more than the next league team. Davidson also sports the worst turnover margin at -4.48 per game with 14.8 forced versus 19.3 given up.
Davidson's lone A-10 win came at Saint Louis, 53-50 on Jan. 18 while the side is 2-18 since a three-game win streak in November. The Wildcats have shown flashes of success despite the difficult stretch, as Davidson won at Virginia, 67-57 on Dec. 28 while eight of the losses were by nine or fewer points.

Scouting Duquesne Women's Basketball
Dan Burt is in his second season guiding the Duquesne Dukes women's basketball program and has continued the success of his predecessor, current Pittsburgh head coach Suzie McConnell-Serio, as the squad is 16-8 overall and 8-3 in A-10 games ahead of a meeting with the Minutewomen. With four more victories, the 2014-15 Dukes team will become the seventh consecutive Duquesne squad to earn at least 20 on the season.
Three from Duquesne score in double-figures on average, led by April Robinson's 15.2 points per game. Amadea Szamosi adds 12.3 while Deva'Nyer Workman chips in 10.3 to help the Dukes own a +8.1 scoring margin, the third-best in the A-10.
Duquesne used its shooting accuracy and assist-to-turnover ratio to win 16 games so far. The Dukes, who are on the longest winning streak in the league at five games, are second in the conference in three-point field goal percentage (.359) and fourth in overall percentage (.412) while they rank second in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.0) with 383 assists dished out against 380 turnovers committed.

Scouting George Mason Women's Basketball
Taylor Brown's Atlantic 10-leading 22.3 points per game has helped George Mason women's basketball to a 12-11 overall record and 4-6 mark in league play entering competition at the Mullins Center. Brown has taken the most field goal attempts in the conference (420) and owns the most makes (163). She is also tops in total points (492), free throws attempted (166) and converted (135).
Two additional Patriots earn at least 10 points per game on average in Jasmine Jackson (11.5) and Sandra Ngoie (10.5), but the opposition outscores George Mason, 71.5-to-70.3, through 23 games.
Nyla Milleson is in her second season as the head coach of the women's basketball program at George Mason. She previously led the Missouri State team from 2007-13, where she reached three WNIT tournaments in six seasons. Prior to that, Milleson started up the NCAA Division II Drury women's basketball team in 2000-01 and coached the side to NCAA Tournament appearances before she departed for Missouri State after the 2006-07 season.

University of Massachusetts women's basketball alumna Tamara Tatham (2003-07) and Team Canada completed a pair of exhibition games over the weekend to close out their precursor play to the 2014 FIBA World Championship.
Tatham had nine points, eight rebounds and four assists during 69-66 overtime loss to Cuba on Friday evening. She followed that performance up with five points, three rebounds and one assist against Spain in a 66-46 defeat the next day.
Canada is in Group B with France, Mozambique and host-Turkey. The first game for the Canadian side is on Saturday, Sept. 27.

University of Massachusetts women's basketball alum Tamara Tatham provided a scoring presence for the Canadian Senior Women's National Basketball Team throughout the three-game Zafer Cup, but Canada was unable to secure victories in either of its final two contests, falling to Turkey, 51-33 on Saturday ahead of a 65-56 loss to Brazil on Sunday.

The tournament is being hosted in Istanbul, Turkey, where Canada faces Turkey on Saturday before concluding tournament play on Sunday against Brazil.

University of Massachusetts women's basketball alumna Tamara Tatham sparked the Canadian Senior Women's National Team to a 66-63 victory over Brazil to cap a three-game sweep at the Edmonton Grads International Classic. The Massachusetts men's and women's basketball programs spent a couple of hours conducting a youth clinic at Belchertown High School to benefit Jessica's Boundless Playground.
More than 100 area children from across western Mass. participated in various individual drill stations and overall camp games during the event, before enjoying a pizza party to wrap up the night's activities.

Women's basketball forward Kiara Bomben provided an update to her on-going team blog today ahead of the 2014 Senior Night contest in the Mullins Center at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27. Bomben, a redshirt-senior, will be honored before the game as the Minutewomen host their final opponent of the season.

I cannot believe it's senior night already! Honestly, where has the time gone? The last month of has flown bye! It seems like only yesterday when we were conditioning at Curry Hicks Cage during preseason and running outside on Garber during the summer.
No matter what the outcome of today's game is, I'm thrilled and honored to have been a part of such an amazing group at the University of Massachusetts. UMass has been my home for three years ow and the memories I have created and shared with my teammates, coaches and everyone else have been unbelievable and something that I'll cherish forever and never forget. I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to be a part of this team..."

Anthony Chiusano of the Daily Collegian spoke with women's basketball head coach Sharon Dawley, forward Kiara Bomben and guard Jasmine Harris for a preview of the UMass-Saint Joseph's game scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. The Minutewomen will celebrate Senior Night before the game to honor the lone competitor of the 2014 senior class, Bomben, as well as graduating team manager Steve Baruffi.
"Backed up by an aggressive offense and active press defense, the Massachusetts women's basketball team defeated Rhode Island on Sunday, to pick up its first victory since Dec. 17.
Now, the Minutewomen (4-24, 1-13 Atlantic 10) are heading into Thursday's game against Saint Joseph's (20-7, 9-5 A-10) with the potential for a winning streak on their minds.
Prior to Sunday's game, UMass coach Sharon Dawley said that the team had decided to implement a press defense from early on in the game against the Rams. As a result, the Minutewomen scored 18 points off of 19 caused turnovers. Heading into Thursday's matchup against the Hawks, Dawley said that early pressure will once again be part of the game plan.
'We pressed early to get everyone aggressive, and we'll do the same thing (on Thursday),' Dawley said. 'We just have to not get exhausted and stay out of foul trouble. But we'll throw it in there to get everyone going again.'
Dawley added that maintaining similar aggression on offense will be important in attacking Saint Joseph's "smart" defense..."

Ready competed for the UMass women's basketball team from 1978-81 and recorded all-America honors as she earned 1,406 career points for the Minutewomen.

The Massachusetts women's basketball team is heading into Tuesday's game against Holy Cross with a feeling it hasn't had in a long time: the momentum of a winning streak.
After defeating Rutgers on Wednesday and following it up with a win over Hartford on Saturday, the Minutewomen achieved their first two-game winning streak since Feb. 22, 2012.
"It really builds our confidence," junior guard Emily Mital said. "Starting off 0-3, we obviously were kind of in a little slump there, and so this two-game winning streak kind of picked us up and now we're feeling pretty confident."
Holy Cross (3-0) comes into the contest with a strong offense that currently averages 83.7 points per game, with all five starters averaging at least 10 points a game...

Following Wednesday's upset win over a Rutgers team coached by Vivian Stringer, the Minutewomen battled a cold start against Hartford on Saturday and came out with a 63-59 come-from-behind victory.
For UMass coach Sharon Dawley, winning consecutive games for the first time in two seasons is a nice accomplishment. But the more vital aspect is how the Minutewomen pulled out those two games: in two different ways.
UMass (2-3) held a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half against Rutgers before they had to hold off a furious rally.

Daily Collegian reporter Andrew Cyr followed up with head coach Sharon Dawley and junior forward Kim Pierre-Louis after UMass took a 63-59 win from Hartford on the road Saturday afternoon. Pierre-Louis provided a career day with single-game personal bests of 19 points and nine rebounds in leading the team to the win.
Massachusetts's women's basketball coach Sharon Dawley knew that with a young roster it was going to take some time for her team to get acclimated to playing at such a competitive level.
However, just five games into the season, with back-to-back nail biting wins only three days apart, this Minutewoman team is gaining confidence quickly, and showing no signs of slowing down after a 63-59 win against Hartford on Saturday.
"I was really happy with our team's performance on the defensive end," Dawley said. "We had a couple big shots from [Jasmine Harris] and [Emily Mital] late in the second half, but it was our ability to defend and get to loose balls that kept us in this game."
Trailing 51-46 with 9:23 remaining, Rashida Timbilla dished the ball out to an open Harris, who buried a deep 3-pointer to cut the Hawks' lead down to just two. Less than two minutes later, Harris drilled another straightaway three to give UMass a 52-51 lead, its first lead since the 14:44 mark of the first half...

Daily Collegian staff reporter Joey Saade stopped by UMass women's basketball practice this week to speak to members of the team in advance of the season. The Minutewomen are getting set to open the season at home in the Mullins Center on Friday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m.
The Massachusetts women's basketball team is ready to turn the page.
After a disappointing 3-26 finish to last season--their worst in 23 years--the Minutewomen are focused on flipping the switch and reversing their fortunes.
If they plan on doing so, they will have to get contributions from the younger players on their roster.
Entering the season, nine out of the 13 players on the roster are entering either their first or second year in collegiate athletics. Three of those players are freshmen Alyx Stiff, Meredith Tarver and Kymber Hill. Another newcomer is redshirt sophomore Amber Dillon, who sat out last season after transferring from Maine.

No team is more excited to start fresh this winter than the Massachusetts women's basketball team.
The Minutewomen ended the 2012-13 season with 13 straight losses and an overall record of 3-26, which was UMass' worst record since the 1990-91 season.
"Last year is over with and we can't do anything about it," said sophomore forward Rashida Timbilla. "We are a new team this year and that's how we are going to approach every situation. We want to bring a new attitude to this team."
This year's squad, which includes 12 underclassmen, has already brought a new identity to the women's basketball team in just a few short weeks of practice...

The half-hour discussion focused on the keys to UMass' season-opening victory over Kent State, Watson recording her 1,000th career point and the upcoming schedule, which includes a trip home to South Bend, Ind., for Watson.

UMass women's basketball kicked off the 2012-13 campaign with an 83-53 drubbing of Kent State at the Mullins Center on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen were paced by four players scoring in double-figures, including senior center Jasmine Watson's game-high 21. Watson used her final basket of the game to become the 18th Minutewoman to eclipse the 1,000-point mark in program history. Freshman Rashida Timbilla tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards to help the winning effort, the only known Minutewoman to secure a double-double during her first contest as a true-freshman.

Former UMass women's basketball standouts Tamara and Alisha Tatham and UMass field hockey assistant coach Shannon Taylor began action at the Olympics over the weekend.
Canada dropped a close game with Russia, 58-53 on Saturday. Tamara Tatham played 25 minutes and totaled four points, five rebounds and two steals. Alisha Tatham saw nine minutes of action.

Congratulations to UMass women's basketball alumni Tamara and Alisha Tatham who have helped the Canadian Senior Women's National Team earn an Olympic berth, capturing the 10th and final spot in the field at the 2012 FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

As the final seconds ticked off the clock in Ankara, Turkey, the magnitude of what was happening started to hit the Canadian women's national basketball team. Japan's 14-2 run in the fourth quarter had fallen short and for the first time since Sydney in 2000, Canada was going to the Olympics.
When the final buzzer sounded of the 71-63 win, the women converged on each other. Some shouted, some cried happy tears and included in the pile were University of Massachusetts alumni Tamara and Alisha Tatham.
"I was almost speechless. It was like 'Oh my god, we're going to the Olympics.' We were all jumping around. People were crying," Tamara said. "It really didn't sink in until a couple hours later. It's a great feeling."
Her younger sister agreed.
"The last minute was pretty emotional for me and the other girls. The time was ticking away and we knew we had it in the bag," Alisha said. "I shed a few tears and was pretty emotional. A dream of mine had finally come true. I was excited about that."

The New Jersey Institute of Technology has just announced that Steve Lanpher has been named as the school's new women's basketball head coach. Lanpher spent the last two seasons as an associate head coach for the Minutewomen under head coach Sharon Dawley after coming to UMass from Vermont where he had spent four years on Dawley's staff.
Here is an excerpt from NJIT's release, which includes a quote from Coach Dawley:
At UMass, Lanpher has assisted Coach Dawley in the first two years of work toward building a championship-quality program in the rugged Atlantic 10 Conference.
"Steve is a great guy and I'm going to miss him and his family," said Dawley, the UMass head coach of her former top assistant. "I'm thrilled that he's getting this opportunity to take over his own program. He's passionate about basketball and developing great relationships with the student-athletes. He's passionate about them excelling in the classroom, as well as on the basketball court."
