Former UMass standout Cady Lalanne started all seven games in Las Vegas (and three in Utah before that) and helped the San Antonio Spurs capture the NBA Summer League title on Monday, defeating the Suns 93-90. Lalanne averaged 6.3 points and 4.7 boards in 19.2 minutes over the 10 games in the two summer events.

He was selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the 55th pick of last month's NBA Draft and will spend the upcoming season with the Austin Spurs in the NBA Development League. But for now, he is spending time with their NBA Summer League team, where he has averaged 7.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in eight games, with the last five as the team has advanced to the semifinals of the Las Vegas event.
Cady Lalanne played his first professional game on Monday, scoring 12 points on 5-of-14 shooting to go along with five rebounds and four blocks in 26 minutes as the Spurs defeated Philadelphia 74-71 in Salt Lake City. Cady spent much of his time guarding No. 3 pick Jahlil Okafor. Of note: The NBA plays 10-minute quarters in summer league.

As Cady Lalanne makes his final preparations for the upcoming NBA Draft (Thursday night), he spoke with Daily Hampshire Gazette beat writer Matt Vautour (@GazetteUMass) about his experience over the past few weeks working out for NBA scouts and coaches.
With the NBA Draft less than a week away, the various mock drafts have been popping up more frequently. The latest to hit the circuit is Draft Express, which has former UMass big man Cady Lalanne projected to go to Philadelphia with the 60th selection at the end of the second round.
Here is a pre-draft interview from last week in Las Vegas.
Former UMass center Cady Lalanne went through another pre-draft workout Monday, this time with the Los Angeles Lakers at their training facility in El Segundo, Calif.Other prospects in attendance included Olivier Hanlan (Boston College), Aaron Harrison (Kentucky), Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (Arizona), Jonathan Holmes (Texas) and Jordan Mickey (LSU).
The Lakers have three selections in this year's NBA Draft - No. 2, No. 27 (from Houston in a trade for Jeremy Lin) and a second round choice at No. 34.
A. Sherrod Blakely (@SherrodbCSN) of Comcast Sports Net also spent time with Cady Lalanne on Wednesday and the duo talked about the UMass graduate's dream of playing in the NBA.
When you're talking about big men expected to be drafted in the second round of the NBA draft, there's usually a significant flaw or two to their game.
UMass big man Cady Lalanne is no exception.
Still, beyond his basketball-playing warts, he has some legit, next-level talent, which is why he is on the radar of several NBA teams, including the Celtics who had him in for a workout on Wednesday.
With four picks in the June 25 draft, the Celtics may give Lalanne some serious consideration with their last pick, which is in the second round, 45th overall.
One of the main factors the Celtics evaluate when it comes to prospects is production.
Lalanne's scoring average improved each of his four years at UMass, which included a career-best 11.6 points as a senior.

Cady Lalanne has his sights set high.
The 6-foot-8 big man from UMass with a 7-foot-5 wingspan would love to model his game after another big man who made quite the impression during his time with the Celtics.
"Since I started playing basketball in ninth grade, KG has been a player I love to watch," Lalanne said of Kevin Garnett after his pre-draft workout Wednesday with the Celtics. "I remember I used to always go to the park and try his fadeaway that he had when he was with the Timberwolves. When he came here and won a championship, I was really excited. Even right now, I still watch him and try to learn from him."
What makes him think he can play like KG?
"Rebound the ball and play defense, that's the strong [parts] right now," Lalanne said. "I still have a lot to work on. I'm just ready to work. I would love to [emulate him]. He can knock the 15-foot jump shot, hit the three here and there and you can always count on him on defense to get stops.
"I can knock down the 15 to 17-foot jump shot, make threes and give a full effort on defense and offense and do everything I can to help the team win."

UMass center Cady Lalanne recently finished a workout with the Indiana Pacers, where they concentrated on pick-and-roll help defense and closing the hole up as quick as possible.He will join classmate Maxie Esho in Boston on Wednesday for a workout at the Celtics facility in Waltham.
Last week we saw Maxie Esho work out for the Boston Celtics and now its time to put the focus on Cady Lalanne. The UMass grad had an NBA pre-draft workout for the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday and will participate in a multi-player exercise with the Washington Wizards on Monday.

On Friday night the UMass men's basketball team opened the 106th season in school history with an exciting 95-87 victory over Siena at the Mullins Center.
The 'Big Four' as coach Kellogg referred to the veteran group of Trey Davis, Maxie Esho, Derrick Gordon and Cady Lalanne all scored in double figures to lead the Minutemen. Davis took over the role of the team's starting point guard after the departure of Chaz Williams and had a career-high of 28 points. Cady Lalanne blocked a career-high six shots despite only playing five minutes in the first half due to foul trouble.

The website CollegeSportsMadness.com has announced it's preseason Atlantic 10 All-Conference teams. Cady Lalanne and Trey Davis were both honored from UMass, with Lalanne on the first team and Davis on the fourth team. The teams appear to be done with position played as a criteria, as opposed to doing a first team of the best five players and so on. Additionally, all 14 teams have at least one player chosen among the 20 selections.

Jon Rothstein (@JonRothstein) has a good chunk of thoughts on the Atlantic 10 in his latest 'Observations' piece on CBSSports.com, including placing the Minutemen back into the underrated category.
He writes...
4. Don't assume an Atlantic 10 downturn: Last summer, this conference was supposed to be down and forgotten. Instead it had a landmark season. The Atlantic 10 lost Temple, Butler, Xavier and Charlotte last year but managed six NCAA tournament teams after earning five spots in the 2013 field of 68. This league repeatedly has shown it can absorb defections, and don't be surprised if that's the case again next season.
Programs like Saint Louis and Saint Joseph's will retool after losing the bulk of their cores from last year, but VCU, Dayton and others look primed to be a nuisance on a nightly basis. George Washington lost Maurice Creek and Isaiah Armwood to graduation but return a strong quartet of juniors in Joe McDonald, Kethan Savage, Patricio Garino and Kevin Larsen. McDonald and Savage never were healthy last season and it will be interesting to see how they respond after an off-season of rehab.
Richmond has one of the country's more electrifying players in undersized combo guard Kendall Anthony, and Dan Hurley has Rhode Island primed to make a jump after big-time additions during the late signing period. The Rams looked like a 20-win team last summer but the loss of starting center Jordan Hare (personal reasons) before last season took away their main defensive anchor. Hare's impending return and the addition of a Top 75 recruit in combo guard Jared Terrell give Hurley two starting caliber players who could be difference makers.
Two more underrated programs? UMass and La Salle. The Minutemen have the A-10's best big man in Cady Lalanne (11.3 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.2 blocks last season), while the Explorers have arguably the league's best frontcourt combo: Jerrell Wright and Steve Zack.
The Atlantic 10 isn't like some other leagues where there are "built-in wins." For the most part, every team is a tough out, and the 10th or 11th best team is this conference often is ahead of the 10th or 11th best team in another conference. Snagging six NCAA bids will be awfully hard to achieve, but history proves completely writing it off wouldn't be wise.

UMass spent Thursday with another practice at NC State, an open workout at the PNC Arena, met the media and wrapped things up with a pep rally at the Sheraton hotel in downtown Raleigh. And UMass alum Julius Erving paid a visit to the team and offered them a message about life and basketball.

Dan Malone of the Springfield Republican has a feature on Cady Lalanne and his importance to the UMass basketball team in the final five games of the regular-season.
UMass put five scorers in double figures again on Saturday in a 80-54 win over Northern Illinois. It wasn't the usual collection as freshman Clyde Santee made the most of his 5-plus minutes on the floor.
A panel of USA Today sports writers picked which teams they thought were the most surprising ones after the first month of the 2013-14 college basketball season.
The group picked four teams which included Villanova, Wisconsin, North Carolina and UMass.
Paul Gotham, Pickin Splinters.com: At 8-0 the UMass Minutemen are the most surprising team in college basketball this season simply because most fans will be surprised by their record. The Minutemen have won 20 or more games in each of the last two seasons, but the strength-of-schedule card was played as the reason why UMass didn't get a spot in the NCAA tournament. Derek Kellogg and his staff have put together an ambitious schedule with what will be six games, before conference games begin, against schools from "power" conferences. Not to mention the Minutemen have also beaten New Mexico and BYU. It won't be long before the country gets its introduction to Chaz Williams. The 5-9 point guard is like Barry Sanders on hardwood bobbing and weaving, switching directions and finding daylight where others would swear there is nothing but darkness. Add in Cady Lalanne averaging a double-double, Sampson Carter getting it done around the basket, and the Minutemen will dance their way into living rooms across America in March.

UMass junior Cady Lalanne was on his list, which is listed alphabetically. While many would argue Sampson Carter should be on the list, Cady has made steady strides over the past two seasons and is a well-deserved inclusion.

Dan Malone of the Springfield Republican has a story today on the Minutemen coming back after more than a week between games and some time off for Thanksgiving.
UMass claimed the Charleston Classic title last night with a 62-56 win over Clemson. Cady Lalanne was a beast all week and earned Most Valuable Player honors after he posted two double-doubles and averaged 15.7 points, 11.7 rebounds and 3.0 blocks per game. The Minutemen are off for a week until traveling to Eastern Michigan next Tuesday, Dec. 3.
UMass used a couple of big runs, including a game-ending 20-4 stretch over the final 7:54 to upset No. 19/20 New Mexico in the semifinals of the Charleston Classic. The Minutemen wore down the tired legs of the Lobos after they had played a very physical double-overtime game with UAB just 24 hours earlier. It was P.A.I.N. at its finest.
UMass is now 5-0 and will face 5-0 Clemson in the championship game on Sunday night at 9 p.m. on ESPN2.
Chaz Williams and Cady Lalanne both posted double-doubles as a quartet of UMass players reached double figures in scoring. UMass fought through a tight first half to take an eight-point lead at the break. The Minutemen extended the margin to as many as 18 at one point before cling with a 16-point win.
UMass is now 3-0 for the third time in the last four seasons and has scored at least 85 points in all three games. The last time a UMass team opened a season with three games of 80 or more was the 1991-92 season. It is also just the fourth time that has happened in school history.

Derek Kellogg told me over the summer that this is the year he believes he can lead his alma mater back to the NCAA Tournament and he's certainly got them headed in that direction. The Minutemen had a tremendous second-half comeback against Boston College on Sunday and then beat a very talented LSU team Tuesday in Amherst. Chaz Williams looks like the best guard in the Atlantic 10 and big man Cady Lalanne has also emerged. Noticeably more svelte than he was a year ago, Lalanne is averaging 21 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks through UMass' first two games.

Mark Chiarelli of the Daily Collegian spent some time with junior center Cady Lalanne and talked about the expectations the 6-foot-10, 250-pound big man has for the 2013-14 season.
Cady Lalanne receives a bounce pass from point guard Chaz Williams in the post, standing with his back to the basket on the left block.
Williams' pass is threaded dangerously, reaching around a defender as he practically shovels the ball through a congested paint area where Lalanne is waiting. The ball is swallowed up in one swift motion, Lalanne gathers, spins into the lane and takes just a single step, finishing on the opposite side of the basket. On this occasion, he finishes with a layup. Plenty of other times in practice, he's delivered a dunk so thunderous that it's shaken the base of the standalone hoop inside Curry Hicks Cage.
Just a few plays later, Lalanne stands at midcourt as the team practices its full court defensive pressure, barking out commands and demonstratively signaling to other members on his team.
It's a simple practice on Halloween, yet another intrasquad scrimmage for a team anxiously awaiting its season opener on Nov. 10 against Boston College. But if you look closely, the evolution of a center is at work.
Lalanne's the first to tell you this year is different.

Here are some recaps from Saturday's win over Dayton that snapped UMass' three-game losing skid. Lots of different players stepped up with big plays at crucial times - from Terrell Vinson's back-to-back 3-pointers in the final two minutes to the Minutemen outscoring the Flyers 17-6 over the final 8:06 - but sophomore Cady Lalanne was the player of the game with 22 points and 14 rebounds in 35 minutes - all career-highs - in recording his fifth double-double of the season.

Rob Dauster of College Basketball Talk put out his list of ten men's basketball programs on the rise entering the 2012-13 season.
UMass: UMass basketball history is limited to, more or less, two people. Julius Erving played for the Minutemen from 1968-1971 before going on to become Dr. J. The other person is John Calipari, who took over a program in 1988 that had 10 straight losing seasons. In his fourth year, he led UMass to the Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles, advancing to the NCAA tournament. He would accomplish that feat for five consecutive years, which culminated in his run to the 1996 Final Four, riding on the shoulders of Marcus Camby, before leaving the program. Bruiser Flint took over and led the Minutemen to two more NCAA tournaments, but they've only won one A-10 title -- the 2007 regular season -- since then. Outside of those seven consecutive NCAA tournaments, UMass has been to one. Ever. In 1962.
That could change this season, as Derek Kellogg has put together arguably the best team in Amherst since the late 90's. The Minutemen return all but one member of their rotation from last season, including Chaz Williams, who is one of the most exciting and underrated point guards in the country. They also bring back Sampson Carter and Cady Lalanne, both of whom were injured for much of last season. The Atlantic 10 is going to be a rugged league this season, but UMass has the horses to make a run at a top four finish.

Chaz Williams is a like a magnet. The undersized point guard has an infectious personality -- and it's easily noticeable if you're in the gym with him for even just a matter of moments. Vinson and Raphiael Putney, the Minutemen should be in position to compete for
a conference title and a berth to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a
quite a while.

"I don't know yet if Cady always knows what he's doing or where he's going,'' Derek Kellogg said.
"It's nice to see him accidentally bump into 14 rebounds in 15 minutes, though. That shows he can be a big-time rebounder here someday.''

Headlining the notebook is news on freshman Cady Lalanne undergoing a procedure to correct a stress fracture in his foot that could keep the big man out until official practices begin in four weeks.
The Minutemen will be holding free clinics at the Big E on Saturday. They will take place in front of the Massachusetts Building with the first running from 10:30-11:30 a.m. and the second from 2-3 p.m. The clinics are for kids 12 and under and are free with Big E admission.
A crew from the ABC show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" was on campus on Tuesday and filmed part of a national ad campaign against bullying with both the men's basketball and women's lacrosse teams for an episode being filmed in Springfield.
