AMHERST -- C.J. Anderson was about a stride behind Trey Davis when he hit midcourt in a 5-on-5 drill at UMass men's basketball practice.
Anderson was on defense when a teammate deflected a pass sending the ball bouncing quickly toward the opposite end of the floor.
By the time Anderson passed Davis it was too late to secure the ball, which bounced over the baseline out of the bounds. In one motion, the freshman leapt, grabbed the ball and caromed it off Davis to give his team possession.
Watching from the sideline, UMass coach Derek Kellogg smiled quickly, before resuming the action.
Anderson's "best attribute is he wants to win," Kellogg said. "Every drill we've done that's competitive he tries to win."
