Fall officially arrived for John McCutcheon last week as he had the Game Tracker for the University of Massachusetts women's soccer team's 2-1 win over New Hampshire open on his computer as he worked in his office.
"It got my blood flowing a little bit," McCutcheon said.
After a tough year for the department in 2010-11, the University of Massachusetts athletic director was glad to have 2011-12 under way.
"I can't wait. I think we have improved. We want to see the effects of that on the court, on the field and on the ice. I think the coaches are excited about it, too," he said. "A lot of things probably didn't go the way they wanted it to last year and they probably have a bad taste in their mouths and they can't wait to get it out of there. I think everybody is looking forward to getting this year started."

Matt Vautour of the Daily Hampshire Gazette has a great feature story on the UMass basketball team and its visit to the VA Hospital in Northampton.
With too little time between Wednesday's win over American International College and Saturday's 3 p.m. game against Holy Cross, most of the University of Massachusetts men's basketball players didn't go home for Thanksgiving.
Instead, the Minutemen visited and shared a turkey dinner with staff at the Northampton Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Northampton on Thursday.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said it was a new experience for most of his players and he was proud of the way they handled themselves.
"It was an eye-opening thing for a lot of us. You want to go and have a good time and brighten somebody's day and let them know we appreciate what they've done," Kellogg said. "Some of them don't have families or can't get home to their families, so it was good to go and change the monotony."
With a throwback game at the Curry-Hicks Cage on Saturday, the Minutemen will be sporting their new throwback uniforms for the first time in the game against Holy Cross. This year's throwback jerseys are replicas of the 1995-96 Final Four season. The style was worn from 1994-97 and will be on display Saturday. They will be worn several other times this season.

UMass also unveiled its 'Mission 1,000' marketing initiative, aiming at selling 1,000 more season tickets to the many families, fans, business owners and corporations throughout Western Massachusetts and the state. The excitement level for both announcements is expectedly high.
"Saying I'm excited is an understatement," said UMass head coach Derek Kellogg. "To make Springfield for a week of the year the mecca of college basketball is great. It's fitting for the national tournament to have a local flavor."

It was an interesting start to the day as Matt Houde and I took a helicopter ride (thanks to the Marines) around campus. We were able to shoot some photos and videos of our facilities and campus in general. The landscape has certainly changed in the 7 years I've been here! On a side note, if you've never taken advantage of the free helicopter rides that happen each semester, do so. You have a pilot who is a Marine and I always say you are never safer then when you have one of those guys around!
Sam The Minuteman and many members of the UMass football team took part in the building of the longest California sushi roll in the world. Read the story in the Springfield Republican.
Volunteers wearing T-shirts that read "UMass, Amherst home of the world's longest California roll" sealed 650 sheets of nori - seaweed - then "glued" it in place with about 200 pounds of sushi rice, then laid on avocado, cucumber and Alaskan crab ... and then rolled all of it into a 422-foot long sushi roll, eclipsing the current record of 340 feet set last November at the University of California, Berkeley.
