AMHERST, Mass. — The University of Massachusetts softball team (18-28) fell to Boston University (41-13) 3-1 in an in-state battle on Sortino Field. Despite clutch pitching from Hannah Streicher, the Minutewomen offense mustered just three hits in the contest.
Streicher continued her strong junior campaign, allowing just three earned runs and stranding nine runners on base. Streicher has allowed three earned runs or less in 13 of her last 14 appearances in the circle, and seven consecutive starts.
Grace Colucci continued to stay hot at the plate, plating the lone run for the Minutewomen. Colucci has recorded an RBI in four consecutive games, and has at least one hit in five of her last six games.
Colucci, Odyssey Torres and Lily Woodworth hit singles for the Minutewomen, as Tiegan Walsh and Riain Keefe also reached on walks.
Boston University opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, as the first four batters of the inning reached base, scoring two runs. With two runners in scoring position, Terriers' Kieren McHugh drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Streicher was able to retire the side, forcing a flyout, fielders choice at home and a groundout to herself to strand all three runners and limit the damage to just 2-0.
Massachusetts struck right back with a run in the bottom of the second. Woodworth lined a one-out single through the right side of the infield, and Walsh walked in the following at bat to put two runners on. Colucci singled through the middle of the infield to score Woodworth and bring the contest to 2-1.
The Terriers added another run in the top of the fourth. Three consecutive singles to lead off the inning plated one, bringing the score to 3-1. Streicher again went on to retired the next three batters to limit the damage.
Over the final four innings, Terriers Kasey Richard 12 of the final 13 batters she faced, only allowing one walk, blanking the Minutewomen attack and ending the game at 3-1.
Streicher (10-14) picked up the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing three runs on 10 hits, one walk and striking out four. Richard (29-6) earned the win in the circle, allowing one run on three hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
The Minutewomen return to action for their final regular season contest of the campaign against Ohio University on Sortino Field.
