Both the men's and women's teams at the University of Massachusetts and Western New England College along with the men's team at Springfield College highlight a Saturday slate that is composed of arguably the largest number of championship-type lacrosse matches ever to be played by Western Massachusetts college teams at home on the same day.
In addition to the Saturday night Colonial Athletic Association men's title showdown between UMass and Delaware at Garber Field at 7, the UMass women, already Atlantic 10 champions, have a 1 p.m. NCAA play-in contest with Canisius at McGurk Stadium. In both contests, a UMass victory results in a berth in the NCAA tournament.
If the University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse team were still in the ECAC, its season probably would be over.
The Minutemen had a solid 2011 season at 9-4, but their resume likely falls a little short of NCAA tournament at-large bid status without enough signature wins. The ECAC has no conference tournament and the Minutemen would have been stuck waiting for next year.
But now, as a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, hope is still very much alive as the No. 3-seed Minutemen (9-4) play No. 2 Penn State (7-6) tonight at 7 in the semifinal round of the CAA tournament at State College.
The Daily Collegian has this preview: UMass, PSU meet again for CAA Semifinals
For the No. 15 Massachusetts men's lacrosse team, Wednesday night's game has a simple motivation: win or go home.
The Minutemen (9-4, 4-2 Colonial Athletic Association) travel to Penn State for a rematch with the Nittany Lions in a CAA Semifinals matchup.
UMass coach Greg Cannella hopes his team does not change a thing despite the greater stakes.
Indoor club level tickets are now available for the ESPNU Warrior Classic lacrosse doubleheader at Rentschler Field on Saturday, April 23.
Fans who have already purchased tickets can pay $26 per ticket to upgrade to the indoor club level seats when they arrive at Rentschler Field.
For new ticket purchases, club level seats are $50 for adults and $40 for students (ID required at gate). Tickets can be purchased on site or by calling the Bushnell Box Office at 860-987-5959.
The second annual ESPNU Warrior Classic features Massachusetts vs. Hofstra at 3 p.m. ET followed by Rutgers vs. Syracuse at 5:30 p.m. ET.
