The football team fell 41-21 last Friday against Buffalo in the season finale for the Minutemen. Despite a 3-9 record, the Minutemen won three of their last six games to end the year. The last two losses of the season came without starting quarterback Blake Frohnapfel who was in the midst of producing one of the best seasons in program history. Despite the tough way to end the year, many media members feel the upcoming season will be big for UMass.

After playing on Wednesday night, the UMass football team will have an abbreviated week as it preps for Akron on Tuesday night (7 PM, ESPN3). As the Minutemen continue to evaluate Blake Frohnapfel's health going into the game, Austin Whipple has taken the first-team reps during practice the last three days.
Sparked by a monster game from linebacker Trey Seals, the UMass defense put together one of its best performances of the season while Tajae Sharpe's 239 yards receiving helped lift the Minutemen to a 24-10 win over Ball State on Wednesday.

Head coach Mark Whipple talks about how he instructed the team to get away for a bit and to just be college students again.

Vautour states that coach Whipple gave the team four days off until having a team meeting on Thursday and practice on Friday. The coaching staff will also focus on recruiting during that time frame.

"We go to MAC opponents now and I can see in the administrators when the games are over - particularly this past week (against Toledo) - that they know they got lucky getting away with a victory. They know they were in a dogfight," he said. "We're as competitive as any team in the MAC and we have the vast majority of the team coming back for next year. That is going to bring some expectations and I think we welcome that with open arms.

"Now we get ourselves into preparation for a really good UMass team that I've been thoroughly impressed with both offensively and defensively as we've been able to dig in and see the job Coach Whipple has done there," he said on Monday's MAC teleconference. "I think they're extremely well-coached, one of the best coached offenses and defenses that I've seen within our conference this year. John Connolly of the Boston Herald has a New England football recap today where he looks at some of the highlights of UMass football's win at Kent State on Saturday.
Saturday's road win snapped a 12-game losing streak, and marked the first time this season that the Minutemen held an opponent to fewer than 30 points.
