Former Hoops Standout Barbee Elevated To Assistant Coach At UK

Former UMass basketball standout and assistant coach Tony Barbee was elevated to Assistant Coach at Kentucky under longtime mentor John Calipari Friday. Barbee had been the special assistant to the head coach during the 2014-15 season, following eight years as the head coach at UTEP and Auburn.

The Indianapolis native starred at UMass from 1989-93 where he helped the program to a pair of NCAA and two NIT appearances. He is currently ranks eight in school history in points (1,643), third in free throws made (477), fourth in free throws attempted (657), tenth in games played (126), fourth in starts (118) and sixth in minutes played (3,692).

After his playing career, he was a graduate assistant on the 1995-96 team before being promoted a year later to a full-time assistant during the first two years of Bruiser Flint's tenure.


Montgomery Advertiser: Tony Barbee might work for John Calipari again

James Crepea of the Montgomery Advertiser has a story on former UMass basketball great and Auburn head coach Tony Barbee who is reportedly in discussions with John Calipari about rejoining his mentor at Kentucky.

 "He and I are talking about coming with us, so that's an option for him," Calipari said during last week's SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, Florida. "I know there's some NBA opportunities he may go after and he may take a year. He's got three years to figure out what he wants to do. He'll be a head coach again but I think he'll have options."

Barbee Named To Indiana Basketball HOF 2014 Silver Anniversary Team

Last month, former UMass basketball great Tony Barbee was among those to be inducted into the upcoming class of the UMass Athletic Hall of Fame. On Tuesday, it was announced that he is among 18 members of the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame 2014 Men's Silver Anniversary Team.

As a senior at North Central High School in Indianapolis, he averaged 26 points and 7.8 rebounds and shot 53 percent. He was a first team All-Indianapolis and honorable mention all-state before he finished his prep career with 1,197 points and 400 rebounds.

     Eighteen men have been named to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's 2014 Silver Anniversary Team, based on outstanding accomplishments as a senior basketball player 25 years ago.
     The team includes 13 members of the 1989 Indiana All-Star squad. Five other all-state players are included to recognize the top of Indiana's high school class of 1989.
     1989 Indiana All-Stars include Mr. Basketball Pat Graham of Floyd Central, as well as Calbert Cheaney, Greg Graham, Rodney Holmes, Chris Lawson, Jamie Matthews, Tony McGee, Rich Mount, Matt Petty, Matt Painter, Kenny Rowan, Casey Schmidt and Nate Tubbs.
     The remaining five, named to various all-state teams are: David Anderson, Tony Barbee, David Hinton, Scott Matthews and Mickey McPherson.
     All Mens Silver Anniversary Team members will be honored at the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame's Annual Men's Banquet on Wednesday, March 26, 2014.


Great Feature On UMass Alum Barbee, Facing Coach Cal

The Lexington Herald-Leader has a must read feature on UMass alum Tony Barbee facing his former coach John Calipari on Tuesday night.

As John Calipari prepared to speak to reporters in the Craft Center on Monday, Auburn Coach Tony Barbee walked by on his way to Kentucky's practice. Huh?

Isn't Kentucky playing Auburn on Tuesday night?

"I told him he's welcome to stay," Calipari said. "It seems like we're running about the same thing. It's not like we're going to confuse him."

Barbee stayed for less than an hour. Then he had to leave to get to Auburn's practice later in the afternoon.

"I don't think it'd make a difference whether I was at (Kentucky's) practice or not," Barbee said.

"We're about helping each other," Barbee said. "I'm running what he's running. He's running what I'm running. Tomorrow when his team calls a play, our team will know what it is because we run the same thing."

AP Feature Story On Tony Barbee

The Associated Press has a feature on new Auburn head coach and UMass alum Tony Barbee. He has a massive challenge, which was emphasized when the Tigers dropped an exhibition game to Division II Columbus (Ga.) State on Monday night.

Barbee has a track record as an assistant for successful programs like alma mater UMass, where he played and coached under Calipari. He also spent six seasons with the current Kentucky coach at Memphis. Calipari says Barbee is "like a son," and predicts he'll have success at Auburn even if it doesn't happen immediately.

If you missed it, check out Andy Katz' story on ESPN.com. "Being visible is a big part of what I have to do,'' said Barbee. "I've done speaking at every VFW club [locally] and speaking around the state and in the city. The only reason I've said no is that I can't be in two places at once. Victories go a long way but visibility does too. A lot of people are saying they haven't seen the Auburn program around.''
