"After working out for several NBA teams prior to the lockout, former University of Massachusetts standout Tony Gaffney has signed a contract to play overseas next season, and former Minuteman teammate Gary Forbes could follow him."
"With the lockout not expected to end quickly, many NBA hopefuls are signing contracts to play elsewhere in order to ensure themselves a paycheck."

Also representing the Atlantic 10 was former Fordham star and Los Angeles Lakers guard Smush Parker, who hit the winning shot for Forbes' X-Men.
The New York Post has coverage of the event.
The gym.
He's a regular at the Nuggets practice facility these days, showing up so much in fact you'd think it was the middle of the season. But it isn't. Most NBA players have been idle for nearly two months now, as the regular season ended in mid-April. The Nuggets season concluded on April 27 after a first round playoff loss to Oklahoma City.
After that Forbes took two weeks off, just two, and then got back to work. Big time.
After playing for modest salaries overseas and in the NBA Development, Forbes resisted any big-ticket purchases during his first season with the Nuggets. He still doesn't have his own car, but he planned to take a quick vacation on Maui.
"The first time I've spent money on myself," he said with a smile.
After a break from basketball, Forbes plans to return to the gym to prepare for an appearance at the FIBA Americas Championship with the Panamanian national team.
"I've got a lot to prove," he said. "That whole not-being-drafted-thing is still lingering. When the NBA season starts, I'm going to try to make my name be heard real loud."
Forbes finished his first NBA season averaging 5.2 points and 1.8 rebounds in 62 games with 11 starts.
If NFL labor talk wasn't giving you your fill of legal fun, the NBA appears ready to follow suit as rumors of a basketball lockout continue to gather steam.
If the NY Daily News is right, the NBA Las Vegas summer league won't be happening this year. The league is usually a chance for rookies to prepare for their first season, while players who were undrafted, or played int eh D-League or overseas can use the league as a chance to get an invitation to somebody's camp. This helped earn Gary Forbes a job last year. Without a summer league there'll be fewer chances for someone to crack a roster.
If there is a work stoppage, even a short one, that postpones the start of the 2011-12 season. It's likely that NBA will have shorter training camps. Players with NBA experience will be safer invites to people camp. For someone like Gary Forbes, who'll be a free agent after the season, this is a good thing.
For someone like Tony Gaffney, who played this season in the D-League, or Anthony Gurley, who isn't expected to be drafted, there is less chance of becoming the next Gary Forbes.
Living is something Forbes no longer takes for granted. Each day after his GForbz3 tweet, Forbes takes two insulin shots. There is another shot before lunch and one or two more before he goes to bed.
The Nuggets small forward has lived with Type 1 diabetes since he was diagnosed in 2005 when he was 19.
"I'm pretty much used to it by now," Forbes said. "It doesn't bother me. It doesn't affect me. I'm still out here running up and down like everybody else."
Read the feature in the Denver Post: Nuggets' Forbes "blessed" to get NBA shot
Two minutes one night, 22 minutes the next. Denver Nuggets rookie Gary Forbes has literally been battling for playing time all year long. Despite not logging the most consistent minutes, the UMass grad has made the most of what time Coach George Karl has given him. Averaging 4.9 points in 12 minutes per game, including eight outbursts of 10 or more points and a career-high 19-point outing against New York earlier this season, Forbes is ready. After a recent practice, we got the chance to hop on the phone with Forbes to talk about life in the Mile-High City after 'Melo, his journey to the NBA and more.

Forbes is making a name for himself after arriving at training camp as a relative unknown. The former Atlantic 10 Player of the Year started four times early in the season while filling in for injured big men Carmelo Anthony and Nene, and he entered the weekend averaging 5.4 points despite playing just 12.2 minutes per game. Using Nuggets.com as his forum, Forbes will periodically share his thoughts on life as an NBA rookie.
Not that it was any surprise, but Nuggets rookie Gary Forbes wasn't waived Wednesday. That means his contract will be guaranteed with Denver for the rest of the season.
"I'm blessed and fortunate to have this opportunity," Forbes said before the Nuggets played the Clippers at the Staples Center. "A lot of guys got waived today. It's a testament to hard work."
The hardworking, fun- loving Forbes has been a breath of fresh air for the Nuggets at shooting guard, averaging 5.9 points and 12.7 minutes entering Wednesday's game. Coach George Karl has become increasingly confident in calling on Forbes in spot situations. In the Nuggets' game Monday against Houston, Forbes didn't play until the fourth quarter and instantly provided a spark, scoring seven points in five minutes.
It was your typical post-practice media scrum. Guys and gals from print media, online, TV, radio. Oh, and Gary Forbes, the 6-foot-7 Nuggetsguard.
Forbes had wandered over from the Nuggets locker room, noticed the huddle around coach George Karl and figured he'd join in. So he pretended his water bottle was a microphone and stuck it in Karl's face.
Benjamin Hochman, one of our Nuggets writers, couldn't resist.
"What about Forbes?" he asked Karl. "What are you thoughts on Gary Forbes?"
Karl looked up, saw Forbes, and smiled. "He took two of the crappiest shots I've ever seen him take in the Philadelphia game," Karl said.
"Ever?" Forbes asked.
"Ever," Karl said. He sighed, and let out a wry smile. "I don't know. I thought about waiving him afterward."
"Those are some strong words. 'Ever'?" Forbes asked.
"Ever," Karl reiterated with a straight face.
"Coach, you've won a thousand games," Forbes said. "And I took the two crappiest shots ever?"
"Ever," Karl said, smiling, "and I think (the assistant coaches) would agree."
With the Denver Nuggets, Gary Forbes played 16 minutes off the bench and scored six points in a 114-106 loss at the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Former UMass star and Brooklyn native Gary Forbes had a feature story in the New York Daily News.
It wasn't a good omen for Gary Forbes, the Brooklyn product who played his first pro game at the Garden Sunday as a 25-year-old rookie.
Before the Knicks beat Forbes' Nuggets, 129-125, Spike Lee, the denizen of all things Brooklyn, admitted to the Daily News that he had never heard of Forbes, who starred at Banneker High in Fort Greene.
Maybe he should have known him since Forbes' team lost to Sebastian Telfair and Lincoln in the 2003 PSAL city championship game at the Garden. Lee famously chronicled Coney Island's Lincoln High in his film, "He Got Game."
While Telfair jumped from Lincoln to the NBA, Forbes took a meandering journey to the pros, through a pair of high schools, two colleges, Italy, Israel, the NBA Development league and finally to the Denver Nuggets this season.
"Every day, every game, every practice," Forbes said with a smile. "First one in, last one out. That's what Coach [Travis] Ford taught me.
His 1,128 points put him 28th all-time at UMass, not bad for a guy who played only two seasons. He was the Atlantic 10 Conference player of the year for the 2007-08 season, and helped lead the Minutemen to a berth in the NIT championship game at Madison Square Garden. He still talks to Ford, now at Oklahoma State, two or three times a month.
The Brooklyn native, Forbes plays his first game in his hometown of New York City at the Knicks on Sunday at 12 p.m.
His quest to reach the NBA was completed last month when he was a surprise addition to the Denver Nuggets, and the team's only rookie has seized the opportunity, averaging 6.2 points in 12.7 minutes per game.
Forbes will make his return to the Bay State Wednesday with the Nuggets, looking to show the region that UMass remains capable of producing NBA-caliber players.
The Boston Globe has a great story on Forbes.
Camby had 14 rebounds to go with five points and three blocks in 36 minutes. Forbes came off the bench for four points and two rebounds in 17 minutes.
Forbes, once an unlikely candidate to even make the roster, was asked if felt like he was the Nuggets' secret weapon. He smiled.
"I like it," Forbes said. "Keep me out of the scouting report."
As for what he's been able to accomplish early this season, including a career-high 19 points against the Knicks, Forbes said he's not surprised.
"No," he said. "I'm a real confident person. I always had it in the back of my head that I can play at this level, and I'm getting a blessed opportunity to show it."
"He's earning his way onto the court, like a man," Coach George Karl said of Forbes, who previously played in Italy and Israel. "I'm very happy for him. I am a little surprised by how effective he's becoming."
Here's the story:
When things started getting bad for Denver on Tuesday night, a fan screamed toward the Nuggets' bench: "Better put Forbes back in!" Gary Forbes, the free-agent invitee who was signed by the team, has been superb in spurts for the Nuggets, and in Tuesday's loss he scored 16 points in 21 minutes. In the first half, he had 11 points in just nine minutes.
"We went small, and at that time we weren't getting anything done with our big guys offensively, so I kind of took a risk," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "For a while, it worked."
On the night, the 6-foot-7 guard/forward also had two rebounds and two assists, one of the few bright spots on an otherwise miserable night.
"I'm at a position where minutes are very scarce," Forbes said, "so I got to take full advantage of the minutes out there on the court. I was able to do that today. I'm just trying to gain the coach's trust to play more minutes."
Forbes previously scored 12 points in 24 minutes in a home game against Dallas last week.

The system is working. And working well.
Springfield Slamm men's basketball coach Steve Sobel has had plenty of reasons to smile the last few weeks, most notable being the news Monday night that former player Gary Forbes had landed an NBA job. Forbes survived the Denver Nuggets' final cuts and will be in uniform Wednesday night, when the team hosts Utah at 8:30 in its 2010-11 opener. "We were absolutely ecstatic," Sobel said. "It has all gone beyond expectations. We knew all along that Gary had the physical talent and he has proven that he is willing and able to make any adjustment to help any team in the NBA."
"It's been a great experience. It still hasn't hit me yet," the former University of Massachusetts standout told the Daily Hampshire Gazette on Monday. "It feels good to cross that off my to-do list in life. Now it's on to some bigger and better goals."

When Gary Forbes was a player at UMass, he and then Minuteman coach Travis Ford were tight. They had similar competitive streaks and Forbes was a perfect player in Ford's system.
So I called Ford tonight to get a comment on Forbes' reaching the NBA. The former UMass coach was excited at the news.
I've talked to him quite often. We stayed in contact and talked a lot lately. It was great to get the phone call from him.
Ford said Forbes tried to play it nonchalant when he called
"He was like 'Hey coach, how're you doing?' and I was like "Did you make it?!"
"Here's a kid who just kept believing in himself more than anything. When he was playing over in Stillwater he'd come over and spend time with me in Stillwater. He kept saying 'Coach I'm going to make it.'"
"Last season he went for the money which I thought was a smart idea, but he kept saying he was going to make it. I think he finally got in the right system."
"He's done the hardest part. The hardest part is getting in. He's a guy that could stick around for a while. He's played well in the preseason and has been able to show what he's capable of doing. He's gotten a lot better since he's left UMass."
"It goes two ways. I'm still in touch with a couple players, who played for me in my first year at Oklahoma State. If you see a guy like that it makes you want to keep trying. But a very small percentage accomplish what Gary is able to accomplish. A very very small percentage. Guys who've been out of college for two years don't usually make it. Some of these guys I'm talking to probably aren't going to make it, but this gives them a little bit of hope to keep going. Players don't realize who hard it is to make the league."
A good half-hour after practice, Al Harrington was entrenched in an intense one- on-one game with Gary Forbes, trash talk and all.
Forbes, who plays guard and forward, has assimilated himself quite nicely into the team this month, and Karl suggested Sunday that Forbes and post Melvin Ely, both free-agent invitees, will make the roster.
The front office will officially make a decision on the two players today.
Forbes had arguably his best preseason game in Denver's finale, scoring 25 points at Phoenix on Friday.
"He's an NBA player," Denver forward Carmelo Anthony said. "He's got an NBA body, a guy who's willing to learn. He's just a good addition to the team."
Karl said Forbes deserves to be on the roster, and that his intensity and scrappiness is somewhat reminiscent of former Denver defensive stalwart Dahntay Jones.
"I've always had work ethic, playing for Travis Ford at UMass," Forbes said. "It comes as second nature for me to try to always work harder than somebody else."
In the preseason, Forbes averaged 10.1 points in 19.1 minutes, and Ely, an NBA veteran, averaged 3.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in 20.1 minutes.
Watch Forbes hit a 3-pointer in this video, 1:00 into the footage.
Forbes came off the bench to play 12 minutes and had six points and three rebounds. He looks closer to securing a roster spot for the regular-season.
Against the defending NBA Champion Lakers, the Denver Nuggets with Gary Forbes lost 102-95 on Saturday at Staples Center. Forbes was the first sub into the game for Denver and played 25 minutes. He tallied 10 points, had three rebounds and two assists.
Gary Forbes has been trying to tune out the praise, and there's been a lot of it to tune out. The 25-year-old former University of Massachusetts swingman has gotten his share of it in preseason training camp as he's trying to make the Denver Nuggets.
"It's been pretty good. It won't mean anything until I make the regular season roster which is what I'm here trying to do," said Forbes Wednesday night shortly after the team landed in Los Angeles for Thursday night's game against the Clippers. "I'm doing some good things, but still nothing."
With the Celtics, Lasme was the second sub off the bench and played 28 minutes. He had six points, making all three of his field goal attempts, while grabbing three rebounds. The Celtics lost 103-92 at Philadelphia.
WATCH these NBA.com highlights, which include Lasme (1:00 into the package).
Camby was limited to just 2:21 of time, because of a groin injury, but is expected to be OK for the start of the year. Here is a recap from the Portland Tribune.
Then there's Gary Forbes, the invitee who has impressed the rest. Keep playing as he did Tuesday -- 24 points, seven rebounds, seven assists -- and he may not make the Forbes 500 but definitely will make the Nuggets' roster.
Former Minuteman Tony Gaffney, who announced on Facebook that he had been cut by the Celtics on Saturday, also used the popular social networking site to say that he'd signed a contract to play in Turkey: "Got a contract offer from Turkey that was impossible to turn down, shipping out tomorrow night! If anyone wants to reach me while I'm out there, ya best bet is through Facebook or Twitter. See y'all around Christmas. Take care."
In addition to 7-footer Andrew McCarthy, West Springfield native Jordan Couture will also walk-on to the UMass roster. Couture, a 6-foot-3 freshman guard starred at Cathedral and is coach Derek Kellogg's godson. Bud Gaffney, Tony's younger brother who was a walk-on last year, has not returned to the Minutemen, according to Kellogg.
Carmelo Anthony was asked which Nugget is surprising him in camp, and he named someone that many didn't even know was in camp. His answer: "Gary Forbes."
The former UMass standout was signed as a free-agent invitee -- which, in basketball terms, is "a camp body." But the versatile 6-foot-7 Forbes has refused to be relegated to such a role. The guy is fighting for a roster spot.
"He's come in and played well," said coach George Karl, who believed that Forbes was a first-round talent who slipped because of his medical record, notably his diabetes.
Karl has not determined his rotation for the preseason games (the first one is Friday), but it's possible Forbes could get some playing time, because Karl said he's going to rest guard Chauncey Billups, who played a lot for Team USA this summer, in half of the games. "Forbes is a wing guy who can play point guard, shooting guard and small forward," Karl said. "He's a scorer and also a pretty good defender. He's up and down the court a lot." Forbes is out in Denver prepping for the preseason and will get his first chance in action at the Nuggets Preseason Jam on Oct. 5.
But prior to his NBA duties with the Raptors, he is going to play for the Springfield Slamm in the Greater Hartford Pro-Am in a playoff game on Friday night. Forbes is seeking a chance to play in the NBA after seeing action in the NBA summer league with the Houston Rockets and Los Angles Clippers.
