If NFL labor talk wasn't giving you your fill of legal fun, the NBA appears ready to follow suit as rumors of a basketball lockout continue to gather steam.
If the NY Daily News is right, the NBA Las Vegas summer league won't be happening this year. The league is usually a chance for rookies to prepare for their first season, while players who were undrafted, or played int eh D-League or overseas can use the league as a chance to get an invitation to somebody's camp. This helped earn Gary Forbes a job last year. Without a summer league there'll be fewer chances for someone to crack a roster.
If there is a work stoppage, even a short one, that postpones the start of the 2011-12 season. It's likely that NBA will have shorter training camps. Players with NBA experience will be safer invites to people camp. For someone like Gary Forbes, who'll be a free agent after the season, this is a good thing.
For someone like Tony Gaffney, who played this season in the D-League, or Anthony Gurley, who isn't expected to be drafted, there is less chance of becoming the next Gary Forbes.
Gaffney had a superb game with 12 points, and dominated the defensive effort with 11 rebounds, seven blocks and six steals.

The team confirmed the move with CBS 3 Springfield Wednesday afternoon. Gaffney told CBS 3 Springfield Sports he decided to leave his team in Turkey in December in order to pursue his dream of returning to the NBA.
He was on the Celtics' roster towards the end of the last season, before being cut in the preseason in 2010.
Tony Gaffney. The Somerset High grad and the last preseason cut of the champion Lakers in 2009, signs with the Celtics in the spring in time to practice with Boston and to sit on the Celtics' bench (in spiffy street clothes) for the NBA Finals against the Lakers. Tony gets released from the C's during the 2010 preseason and plays pro ball in Turkey.
Former Minuteman Tony Gaffney, who announced on Facebook that he had been cut by the Celtics on Saturday, also used the popular social networking site to say that he'd signed a contract to play in Turkey: "Got a contract offer from Turkey that was impossible to turn down, shipping out tomorrow night! If anyone wants to reach me while I'm out there, ya best bet is through Facebook or Twitter. See y'all around Christmas. Take care."
In addition to 7-footer Andrew McCarthy, West Springfield native Jordan Couture will also walk-on to the UMass roster. Couture, a 6-foot-3 freshman guard starred at Cathedral and is coach Derek Kellogg's godson. Bud Gaffney, Tony's younger brother who was a walk-on last year, has not returned to the Minutemen, according to Kellogg.

"Numbers, just a lot of numbers [in front] of him," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said when asked about Gaffney's departure. "He plays extremely hard. He's one of those guys that you would love to figure out a way to keep him on the team. At the end of the day, the numbers got him.
Here is the comment from Gaffney's Facebook page.
"All good things must come to an end. It was a great time being w the celtics, it ended today. I appreciate all the love n support. You guys are the best. My agent is back to the drawing board and stirring up something. So when the next move is finalized you all will know. Thanks again everyone."
Celtics Hub had a chance to speak with the 6'8" UMass product, one on one, to gain some perspective on Tony's mindset heading into camp and what he must do to make this team:
Assuming the Celtics keep the maximum 15 players and depending on how other positions shake out, Gaffney could be in a battle with summer acquisition Von Wafer for one of the final roster spots. Despite that uncertain future, Gaffney has a good feeling about the Celtics this season.
"The environment in the locker room right now is something special," Gaffney said this morning before the C's charity golf tournament at the Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy. "There's obviously a lot of talk about the Miami Heat right now, but we're a team that's determined and looks ready to get this thing going."
Celtics Town has a snipet on Gaffney and his enthusiasm for the season.
Gaffney knows he's going to have to fight just to earn a spot on the 15-man roster, but after being a part of Boston's run to the cusp of an NBA title last season, he's aware of what's brewing this season.
"The environment in the locker room right now, it's something special," said Gaffney. "I know there's a lot of talk about the Miami Heat right now, but we're a team that's determined and looks ready to get this thing going."
Gaffney raved about the shape that players are arriving in Boston in, stressing how excited everyone is to get this season started. Rivers said he wanted his players to take it easy this offseason given the extended 2009-10 campaign, but admitted that guys were arriving in better shape that he could have imagined.
Gaffney also noted he's excited about the potential for having fellow UMass product Lasme in camp.
"It's nice to see a familiar face, even if I know all the guys [on the Celtics roster] really well now," said Gaffney. "[Lasme] looks really good, really fit. He'll bring a lot to camp."
Check out various stories on former UMass basketball All-American Stephane Lasme and his invitation to Boston Celtics preseason camp.
On the evening of Wednesday, April 14, as the Celtics walked into the TD Garden to gear up for their 82nd and final game of the NBA's regular season, they entered the locker room to find two new faces staring back at them. The two new guys were Oliver Lafayette and Tony Gaffney, a pair of relatively unknown youngsters looking to get their big break in the NBA. Lafayette was a D-League castoff; Gaffney was a former UMass Minuteman returning from a brief stint in Israel. Neither had ever played a minute in the NBA.
