Baseball Drops Midweek Matchup To Siena, 7-4

The Minutemen return to MACtion, hosting Ohio for a three-game series, beginning on Friday, May 1.
UMass moved to 14-23 overall, while Siena improved to 16-24 on the season.
Vance Bonior and Sam Hill had one hit apiece, as Hill led the team in RBI with two. Bonior and Matt Travisano also registered one RBI each. Reece McCarthy contributed two runs on the day with Anthony Tirado and Dean Gobeil both scoring one.
Siena got on the board first with an RBI single in the third to lead, 1-0.
Massachusetts took back the run to tie up the game at 1-1 in the fourth. McCarthy led off the inning with a walk, before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error. McCarthy then crossed the plate on a ground out from Travisano to get UMass on the board.
In the top of the fifth, the Minutemen notched the go-ahead run to take a 2-1 lead. Tirado was walked, before stealing second on a double steal attempt. Bonior then singled to right field as Tirado came across home plate.
The Saints pushed across three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to claim a 4-2 lead. Siena added two more runs in the sixth to extend its lead to 6-2.
After one out to start the top of the eighth, McCarthy was walked, before advancing to second on a wild pitch with then two outs. Marc Willi was walked, as Dean Gobeil came into the game as a pinch runner. Gobeil went to second and McCarthy took third on a wild pitch. Will Briggs then took his place at first to load up the bases after being walked, with Tommy Hennessey coming in a pinch runner. Hill hit a single through the left side, driving home McCarthy and Gobeil to get UMass back within two at 6-4.
Siena pulled ahead 7-4 in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single. The Saints were able to hold on to their lead heading into the ninth after a quick one-two-three final frame.
Lorcan Lee (0-4) had the loss for Massachusetts after allowing three runs, with one earned, on five walks and striking out one in one inning.
George Handal (2-1) earned the win for Siena, giving up three runs, one hit, eight walks and striking out two in 3.2 innings of work. Marcus Botelho picked up the save allowing no runs, one hit and walks with two strikeouts through 1.1 innings.
Massachusetts hosts Mid-American Conference rival Ohio for a three-game series on Friday, May 1, through Sunday, May 3. First pitch on Friday is slated for 3 p.m., before a 1 p.m. start time on Saturday. Sunday's game will begin at 12 p.m., as all three games will be streamed on ESPN+.
