New NESN Quiz Show 'Schooled' Looking to Cast UMass Students
Want to represent the University of Massachusetts on a new NESN reality television series? UMass students have the opportunity to compete against students from other universities in academic and intelligence-based challenges on Schooled.
The show will pit students from eight different New England universities -- Massachusetts Amherst, Boston College, Boston University, Connecticut, Maine, Northeastern, Providence and Vermont -- against each other in a battle of brainpower. In each episode of Schooled, two teams of three students from two different colleges will compete in challenges. The winning team at the end of each episode will move forward in a tournament-style bracket, while the defeated team will be eliminated from the competition.
Schooled is looking for UMass freshmen, sophomores and juniors to participate. Here are the casting call dates, times and locations.
Friday, March 25, 1 p.m.-5 p.m.
Goodell Building, Lounge adjacent to Room 504

In case you are wondering the latest on the UMass-SLU game being played with the weather in the midwest. UMass officials have been in touch with both Saint Louis and Atlantic 10 officials through the week as UMass travelled. Barring major changes in the weather, the game is expected to be played as both teams are in town, the television truck and staff have arrived.
Here is an update from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The city is pretty much on lockdown because of the storm and the Blues have called off their game tonight against Colorado. SLU is expecting to play its game with UMass on Wednesday night at Chaifetz Arena and will finalize its decision on Wednesday afternoon.
There's good reason to expect the game to be played. UMass got into town on Monday night, so they're here, and the officials are expected to be here. (The crew for the game was juggled so the refs weren't coming in from the East Coast.) If the storm has passed by midday Wednesday, as anticipated, that should allow SLU to play the game. The SLU campus was closed on Tuesday, and if it's closed again on Wednesday, that could complicate matters.
The Blues' game was called off even though both teams and the officials were in town because it was decided it was too dangerous for fans and arena employees to travel to the game. The roads figure to be better by Wednesday evening if the storm sticks to its schedule.
I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Our athletic department staff will keep you updated on the rescheduling of the event. If you have any questions, please call Jason Germain at 413.577.0267, or email jag@admin.umass.edu

The University of Massachusetts men's basketball team will play Central Florida on Wednesday night, a game matching two teams with a combined 17-3 record. The unbeaten visitors include Marcus Jordan, son of Michael. But a sparse crowd is expected, because at UMass home games these days, a sparse crowd is the rule.
UMass officials are more than baffled. They are worried, because basketball is still considered the school's flagship sport, in terms of image and revenue potential.
Check out CBS 3 Springfield's feature on the UMass Athletic Department spreading cheer at the local Shriners Hospital.
Children spending the holiday in the hospital got a fun surprise today. UMass athletes made their annual trip to Shriners Hospital for Children , passing out toys to the kids. The trolleys they pulled looked a little like Santa's sleigh.
Athletes from several different UMass teams helped give hundreds of toys away. Basketball player, Sean Carter, says it's important to brighten the kids' day.
"These kids enjoy it. There's some things in life they really don't get a chance to do so it helps them know that people care about them," he says.
UMass collected the toys at Minutemen basketball and hockey games. Doctors and trainers from UMass' athletic department donated money to give Shriners Hospital for Children a red Wiii this year.

With too little time between Wednesday's win over American International College and Saturday's 3 p.m. game against Holy Cross, most of the University of Massachusetts men's basketball players didn't go home for Thanksgiving.
Instead, the Minutemen visited and shared a turkey dinner with staff at the Northampton Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Northampton on Thursday.
UMass coach Derek Kellogg said it was a new experience for most of his players and he was proud of the way they handled themselves.
"It was an eye-opening thing for a lot of us. You want to go and have a good time and brighten somebody's day and let them know we appreciate what they've done," Kellogg said. "Some of them don't have families or can't get home to their families, so it was good to go and change the monotony."

- Join us for the UMass Football Radio tonight at 7 p.m., at the Hangar Pub & Grill. Tonight we will feature a trio of seniors in special teams demon Woody Carter IV, defensive back James Carven and fullback Scott Duggan. Coach Kevin Morris will also take questions from the fans. Be sure to send one in.

The Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst today announced that the vast archival collection of Mark H. McCormack, creator of the sport management and marketing industry, will be housed at the university, providing an unprecedented opportunity for research and education in the field.
The extraordinary McCormack Collection gift comprises McCormack's writings, photographs and client-related memorabilia, dating to 1960 when a handshake with legendary golfer Arnold Palmer launched what would become IMG International, the world's largest sport management firm. The collection spans McCormack's lifetime (1930-2003) and totals approximately 10,000 boxes, or 16,000 linear feet of material. In conjunction with Isenberg's Department of Sport Management, the university's W.E.B. Du Bois Library has embarked on a comprehensive assessment of the collection and will digitize much of it, making it available to researchers and students worldwide through a special website.

"It's cutting edge," UMass athletic director John McCutcheon said. "I think it gives us a great new vehicle to provide access to all of our sports to our fan base. We have to work hard to make sure the quality is there. We're pretty excited about the potential of this."

The radio home for Boise State football games will change in 2010 -- a return to KBOI 670 AM -- but the announcers will remain the same. Former UMass "Voice of the Minutemen" Bob Behler will begin his third season as the team's play-by-play announcer. He worked at UMass from 1999-2008. In addition, Boise State announced Friday that KBOI will have a 5-hour pregame show. Read the story in the Idaho Statesman.
