Anthony Chiusano of the Daily Collegian spoke with women's basketball head coach Sharon Dawley, forward Kiara Bomben and guard Jasmine Harris for a preview of the UMass-Saint Joseph's game scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 27 at 7 p.m. The Minutewomen will celebrate Senior Night before the game to honor the lone competitor of the 2014 senior class, Bomben, as well as graduating team manager Steve Baruffi.
"Backed up by an aggressive offense and active press defense, the Massachusetts women's basketball team defeated Rhode Island on Sunday, to pick up its first victory since Dec. 17.
Now, the Minutewomen (4-24, 1-13 Atlantic 10) are heading into Thursday's game against Saint Joseph's (20-7, 9-5 A-10) with the potential for a winning streak on their minds.
Prior to Sunday's game, UMass coach Sharon Dawley said that the team had decided to implement a press defense from early on in the game against the Rams. As a result, the Minutewomen scored 18 points off of 19 caused turnovers. Heading into Thursday's matchup against the Hawks, Dawley said that early pressure will once again be part of the game plan.
'We pressed early to get everyone aggressive, and we'll do the same thing (on Thursday),' Dawley said. 'We just have to not get exhausted and stay out of foul trouble. But we'll throw it in there to get everyone going again.'
Dawley added that maintaining similar aggression on offense will be important in attacking Saint Joseph's "smart" defense..."

The Massachusetts women's basketball team is heading into Tuesday's game against Holy Cross with a feeling it hasn't had in a long time: the momentum of a winning streak.
After defeating Rutgers on Wednesday and following it up with a win over Hartford on Saturday, the Minutewomen achieved their first two-game winning streak since Feb. 22, 2012.
"It really builds our confidence," junior guard Emily Mital said. "Starting off 0-3, we obviously were kind of in a little slump there, and so this two-game winning streak kind of picked us up and now we're feeling pretty confident."
Holy Cross (3-0) comes into the contest with a strong offense that currently averages 83.7 points per game, with all five starters averaging at least 10 points a game...

Following Wednesday's upset win over a Rutgers team coached by Vivian Stringer, the Minutewomen battled a cold start against Hartford on Saturday and came out with a 63-59 come-from-behind victory.
For UMass coach Sharon Dawley, winning consecutive games for the first time in two seasons is a nice accomplishment. But the more vital aspect is how the Minutewomen pulled out those two games: in two different ways.
UMass (2-3) held a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half against Rutgers before they had to hold off a furious rally.

Daily Collegian reporter Andrew Cyr followed up with head coach Sharon Dawley and junior forward Kim Pierre-Louis after UMass took a 63-59 win from Hartford on the road Saturday afternoon. Pierre-Louis provided a career day with single-game personal bests of 19 points and nine rebounds in leading the team to the win.
Massachusetts's women's basketball coach Sharon Dawley knew that with a young roster it was going to take some time for her team to get acclimated to playing at such a competitive level.
However, just five games into the season, with back-to-back nail biting wins only three days apart, this Minutewoman team is gaining confidence quickly, and showing no signs of slowing down after a 63-59 win against Hartford on Saturday.
"I was really happy with our team's performance on the defensive end," Dawley said. "We had a couple big shots from [Jasmine Harris] and [Emily Mital] late in the second half, but it was our ability to defend and get to loose balls that kept us in this game."
Trailing 51-46 with 9:23 remaining, Rashida Timbilla dished the ball out to an open Harris, who buried a deep 3-pointer to cut the Hawks' lead down to just two. Less than two minutes later, Harris drilled another straightaway three to give UMass a 52-51 lead, its first lead since the 14:44 mark of the first half...

The University of Massachusetts women's basketball earned its first win of the 2013-14 season in stunning fashion with an upset victory over national powerhouse Rutgers, 64-63 on Wednesday evening. The Massachusetts women's basketball team is ready to turn the page.
After a disappointing 3-26 finish to last season--their worst in 23 years--the Minutewomen are focused on flipping the switch and reversing their fortunes.
If they plan on doing so, they will have to get contributions from the younger players on their roster.
Entering the season, nine out of the 13 players on the roster are entering either their first or second year in collegiate athletics. Three of those players are freshmen Alyx Stiff, Meredith Tarver and Kymber Hill. Another newcomer is redshirt sophomore Amber Dillon, who sat out last season after transferring from Maine.

The Minutewomen ended the 2012-13 season with 13 straight losses and an overall record of 3-26, which was UMass' worst record since the 1990-91 season.
"Last year is over with and we can't do anything about it," said sophomore forward Rashida Timbilla. "We are a new team this year and that's how we are going to approach every situation. We want to bring a new attitude to this team."

UMass women's basketball kicked off the 2012-13 campaign with an 83-53 drubbing of Kent State at the Mullins Center on Saturday afternoon. The Minutewomen were paced by four players scoring in double-figures, including senior center Jasmine Watson's game-high 21. Watson used her final basket of the game to become the 18th Minutewoman to eclipse the 1,000-point mark in program history. Freshman Rashida Timbilla tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards to help the winning effort, the only known Minutewoman to secure a double-double during her first contest as a true-freshman.

Michael Counos and David Martin preview tonight's women's basketball game against CCSU. UMass is coming off a season opening, 55-49, victory over Boston University last Sunday.
"The Massachusetts women's basketball team will look to win its second straight game at home when it takes on Central Connecticut State on Wednesday night at the Mullins Center," writes Counos.

As the 2010-11 school year wound down, Carolann Cloutier faced a difficult decision as she plotted her upcoming summer.
After sitting out the season at the University of Massachusetts under NCAA transfer rules, Cloutier could return home to Montreal and compete in the Canada Basketball Women's Elite Performance Program to further her hopes of someday being an Olympian, or stay in Amherst and try to help the Minutewomen get better.
Cloutier chose to stay. Projected as the Minutewomen's starting point guard, the sophomore wanted to work with her UMass teammates in hopes of being ready to take on the leadership role required of the position.
"I think I made the right decision," Cloutier said. "I got to know them and definitely got the trust from them. ... You want to be a leader, but you don't want to force it. You have to get to know the girls first and get chemistry before you can lead."

It's not an automatic, but in rare cases the NCAA will grant a sixth year of eligibility to a student-athlete, and that was the desired decision this week for University of Massachusetts women's basketball guard Megan Zullo.
Zullo, who averaged 10.5 points and 4.5 assists last season while setting a team record with 1,136 minutes played, will return to the Minutewomen for the 2011-12 campaign.
Normally a student's athletic eligibility is four seasons, but sometimes the student is offered the opportunity to redshirt for a year to spread that eligibility over five years. But the NCAA may also grant a sixth year of eligibility, only if a player has missed two seasons because of an injury or circumstances beyond a player's control.

The collegiate careers of Megan Zullo, Cerie Mosgrove and Stephanie Lawrence came to a close Thursday when the University of Massachusetts women's basketball team lost 77-66 to Charlotte in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at the Tsongas Center.
"It's pretty weird" that this is the end, said Mosgrove. "It's a little bittersweet but mostly not ready for it. It's sad. We wish we could have gone longer, it's been a fun year."

For University of Massachusetts women's basketball coach Sharon Dawley, this weekend's Atlantic 10 Tournament represents an opportunity.
"We have a weekend where we have a chance to end on a better note," said Dawley, who is wrapping up her first year leading the Minutewomen. "Let's end on a note that we can look back on when we're running hills and lifting weights. You always want to look back on a positive memory. I want the last thing we look back on is playing well in the tournament."
The No. 12-seeded Minutewomen (7-22, 3-13) play No. 5 Charlotte (21-8) at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Tsongas Arena in Lowell, which is hosting the event. Charlotte was one of five teams that finished 9-5 in A-10 play.

On Sunday, the UMass women's basketball team will face its highest ranked opponent at home since 1998. Matt Vautour has a preview of the matchup in the Daily Hampshire Gazette.
UMass sophomore center Jasmine Watson was expecting quite the challenge.
"They're the biggest team we have in our conference," said Watson, who leads UMass with 14.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. "They're two of the greatest players in the country right now. It's definitely a challenge for us. We're willing to step up and take it."

The Minutewomen erased a 17 point deficit for a second consecutive game, en route to a win over Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday evening at the Mullins Center, a team that went into the contest riding a six-game winning streak and ranked No. 55 in RPI.
