Minutewomen Swept by Ramblers
April 18, 2025 | Softball
AMHERST, Mass. -- Massachusetts (11-27, 4-10 A-10) fell short against Loyola Chicago (15-30, 10-10 A-10) this weekend, dropping all three games at Sortino Field on Friday and Saturday.
The Minutewomen struggled to find a rhythm offensively in the first game due to a complete-game shutout by the Ramblers' Pepowski, dropping a 5-0 game in the opening matchup. Lydia Castro, Odyssey Torres, and Brooke Musch each tallied hits for UMass. Julianne Bolton threw all seven innings for Massachusetts, tallying eight strikeouts. The Ramblers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning, capitalized by a three-run home run in what would be the only frame either side would cross the plate. The Minutewomen got two runners on base in the bottom of the fifth, however could not find an answer to chip away at the lead.
Loyola Chicago carried its momentum into the second game, hitting a three-run home run with one out in the top of the opening inning to take an early 3-0 lead. Lydia Castro brought UMass within one run in the bottom of the fourth, doubling down the right field line to score Riain Keefe and Sophia Thormeyer. Massachusetts would surrender back-to-back singles with two runners on in the top of the seventh, making it a 6-2 deficit heading into the final frame. Torres, Ella Stevinson, and Olivia Packard rattled off three consecutive hits as Torres crossed the plate to begin the Minutewomen's seventh-inning rally. Taylor Richardson and Olivia Cutuli came in to pinch run for Stevinson and Packard, scoring off a 2 RBI single by Sophia Thormeyer to bring Massachusetts within one run with only one out. UMass would put the ball in play on back-to-back at bats, grounding out on both occasions as the Ramblers shut the door at a walk-off in a 6-5 decision. Hannah Streicher piched all seven innings for the Minutewomen, striking out five batters.
Massachusetts were unable to answer in the final game of the series, dropping a 12-3 decision on Saturday. Riley Kairer and Musch led the way with two hits each, Torres and Lily Woodworth each tallied hits as well. Natalee Horton struck out five batters in five innings, surrendering two earned runs. A total of six errors by UMass proved insurmountable, as the Ramblers's bats capitalized to tally runs in the fourth, fifth, and seventh innings. The Minutewomen would tack on three runs in the final two frames of action but could not close the gap with just six outs to work with.
