April 23, 2025 | Softball
AMHERST, Mass. -- Massachusetts (11-29, 4-12 A-10) suffered a two-game series sweep at the hands of Rhode Island (11-28, 5-14 A-10) on Wednesday, dropping both games of the mid-week doubleheader at Sortino Field.
UMass struck first in game one, as Lydia Castro singled into right field to bring home Brooke Musch. The Minutewomen would surrender the lead in the top of the third inning off a 2 RBI single by Bulinski. Riley Karier got in scoring position in the bottom half of the inning with a two-out triple in an attempt to level the score, however was unable to cross home plate. A sacrifice fly in the fourth and an error in the sixth would tally two more runs for URI as Massachusetts was unable to mount a comeback, dropping a 4-1 decision. Hannah Streicher threw all seven innings, striking out two batters and surrendering just two earned runs.
The Rams jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the third inning to open the scoring in game two, answered quickly by a sacrifice fly from Lily Woodworth to score Musch and a 2 RBI double by Katharine Heslin in the bottom half of the frame. Massachusetts kept the bats rolling in the next inning, as Kairer (walk, RBI), Castro (2 RBI double) and Heslin (RBI single) brought in runs to take a 7-4 lead after four. URI got a run back in the fifth, as a sacrifice fly brought in Sterner. Rhode Island surged back in the top of the sixth, showing patience at the plate and taking advantage of fielding errors to tack on five runs in the frame. UMass would tally three hits across the sixth and seventh innings, unable to overcome the deficit and falling short, 9-7.
