Softball Splits Friday Doubleheader Against Bowling Green

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — The University of Massachusetts softball team (17-27, 8-15 MAC) split the first two games of a three contest series against Bowling Green (18-25, 6-16 MAC) on Friday at Meserve Field. After falling 5-1 in the first game of the day, UMass responded with a 6-5 victory to close the day.
Grace Colucci led the offense for Massachusetts, recording three hits on the day, including a career-high three RBI performance in the second game of the day.
Olivia Cutuli earned her first collegiate save, entering in relief in the second game of the doubleheader.
Massachusetts returns to action for the final game of the series at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday on Meserve Field.
Game One
UMass 1, Bowling Green 5
In the opening game of the day, timely hitting and clutch fielding secured the game for the Falcons.
Seven Minutewomen recorded hits for Massachusetts, with Brooke Musch, Odyssey Torres, Lillie Scheivert, Lily Woodworth, Katharine Heslin, Grace Colucci and Eliana Raposo each hitting singles. Woodworth plated the lone run for Massachusetts.
UMass opened the game getting on the board first. Torres and Scheivert hit consecutive singles with two outs, before a fielding error on a Woodworth ground ball scored Torres and gave Massachusetts a 1-0 advantage after the top of the first.
The Falcons responded in the bottom of the second plating two runs on four hits and an error. Hannah Streicher was able to limit the damage, as following a bunt single to load the bases with one out, Streicher forced a 4-2 fielders choice and pop out to keep the Bowling Green lead at 2-1.
Bowling Green tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend its lead to 5-1.
Massachusetts nearly cut into the Falcon lead in the top of the sixth, but stranded two runners.
The Minutewomen were retired in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
Streicher (9-13) picked up the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits in 6.0 innings. Mackenzie Krafcik (9-9) earned the win for the Falcons, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out one.
Game Two
UMass 6, Bowling Green 5
In the second game of the day, the Minutewomen held off a late Bowling Green charge to secure their 17th win of the season.
Grace Colucci led Massachusetts with two hits and a career-high three RBI's. Heslin, Woodworth, Scheivert and Musch each recorded hits, with Scheivert doubling. Woodworth, Heslin and Tiegan Walsh each had one RBI.
After the first combined six batters were retired, Massachusetts opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. An error and two walks loaded the bases with one out, before Colucci singled to right field plating two runners and taking an early 2-0 lead. Bowling Green limited the damage by throwing out a runner attempting to tag up from third, ending the inning on the double play.
Kelsey Blanchette surrendered her first base runner in the bottom of the third. After retiring the first seven batters of the game, Katie Hutter doubled to the right center gap. Blanchette regathered herself and retired the next two batters.
In the bottom of the fourth, Massachusetts tacked on another run. With Woodworth on second and Walsh on first, Colucci singled through the middle of the infield, scoring Woodworth easily and extending the UMass lead to 3-0.
The Minutewomen lead ballooned to 6-0 in the top of the fifth, as after a single and two walks loaded the bases with one out, Woodworth drew a walk of her own to score one run. Walsh flew out to center to score a second run on a sacrifice fly, and Heslin followed with a single to plate a third run of the inning.
Bowling Green did not go down easy, as the Falcons immediately responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to bring the contest to 6-4.
