Massachusetts Softball Drops Doubleheader Against Ohio

May 01, 2026 | Softball

AMHERST, Mass. — The University of Massachusetts softball team (18-30, 9-17 MAC) dropped the first two games of a three game series against Ohio (35-17, 17-9 MAC) on Sortino Field on Friday. After a gritty 2-1 final in game one, the Bobcats exploded for 10 runs, taking a 10-4 victory.

Grace Colucci continued to stay hot at the plate, leading the Minutewomen offense with four hits on the day. Colucci has recorded at least one hit in seven of her last eight games, with eight RBI's during that stretch.

Hannah Streicher continued to stay dominant in the circle, allowing just two runs and striking out four in the first game. Streicher has allowed three earned runs or less in 14 of her last 15 appearances, including her last eight consecutive starts.

Game One
UMass 1, Ohio 2

In the opening game of the day, despite another strong outing from Streicher, the Minutewomen recoded just four hits in the contest. Riain Keefe and Grace Colucci each had one hit, with Odyssey Torres leading the offensive unit with two hits, including an RBI double. Colucci also drew a walk, as well as senior catcher Olivia Packard

The Bobcats got off to a quick start, as on the third pitch of the game, Belle Hummel blasted a leadoff homer to the right center gap, giving Ohio a 1-0 advantage. Streicher was able to shake off the slam, retiring the next three batters on eight pitches.

Massachusetts struck right back in the bottom half of the first. Keefe was hit by a pitch to leadoff the Minutewomen, and later swiped second to get into scoring position. Torres doubled to right center with one out to plate Keefe and knot the game back at 1-1.

In the top of the third inning, Ohio scored again, after a leadoff walk, single and consecutive flyouts allowed a runner to tag from third, giving Ohio a 2-1 advantage.

After retiring eight of nine batters she faced from the fourth to the sixth inning, Streicher ran into trouble allowing a two-out single, followed by a double to put two runners in scoring position. Streicher was able to strike out the next batter looking, working out of the jam and keeping Ohio off the board.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Colucci slapped a leadoff single through the middle of the infield, before the following three Minutewomen flew out to end the game.

Streicher (10-15) was handed the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing two runs on eight hits, two walks and four strikeouts in 7.0 innings. Skipp Miller (19-7) earned the win allowing just one run on four hits, two walks and four strikeouts in 7.0 innings.

Game Two
UMass 4, Ohio 10

Despite achieving double-digit hits for the sixth time this season, Ohio's 10 run performance was too much for the Minutewomen to overcome. Colucci led the offensive unit with three hits in three trips, including three RBI's, with Lillie Scheivert also recording three hits. Keefe, Torres, Walsh, Katharine Heslin and Packard each recorded hits for the Minutewomen, as Heslin knocked in the fourth run for UMass.

Ohio started off hot, plating three runs on two hits and an error to take an early 3-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Minutewomen responded, cutting the deficit to one. Scheivert hit a leadoff single through the right side of the infield, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lily Woodworth. Colucci doubled to left center, plating Scheivert and bringing the score to 3-1. Colucci advanced to third on a deep fly from Walsh, and a Heslin single plated Colucci, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Bobcats.

Ohio immediately responded with four runs in the top of the third, including two home runs, extending its lead to 7-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, Colucci struck again. Scheivert again worked a leadoff hit, doubling down the right field line, before Colucci scored Scheivert with a single to left center. Walsh singled, and Heslin drew a walk to load the bases with one out, but UMass was unable to capitalize, popping out to the pitcher and lining out to short to end the inning, trailing 7-3.

Massachusetts plated one more in the bottom of the fifth, as Colucci singled with two runners in scoring position to plate one and bring the score to 7-4.

Ohio tacked on three more runs in the top of the sixth to take a commanding 10-4 lead, a lead it held on to until the games end.

Olivia Cutuli (3-6) was handed the loss for the Minutewomen, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits, one walk and three strikeouts in 2.0 innings of work. Kelsey Blanchette entered in relief, allowing four runs on nine hits, walking one and striking out one in 5.0 innings. Keegan Moore (9-2) picked up the win for Ohio, allowing two runs on six hits in 3.0 relief innings.

The Minutewomen return to action for their final regular season game of the season to honor its seniors for the final game against Ohio on Sortino Field at noon.
