Minutewomen Rally In Game Two To Earn Series Split At Saint Joseph’s

UMass rallied back from down four runs in game two by scoring 11 runs in the final four innings of a 12-9 win.
Game 1 – Saint Joseph's 17, UMass 11
The Minutewomen opened up game two by scoring a run in their first trip to the game for the third straight game in the series, plating seven runs on two hits and seven free passes in the first. Jules Shields and Payge Suggs pushed the UMass lead to five runs with back-to-back RBI singles with one down following three runs on a walk a pair of wild pitches. Shields finished game one with a pair of hits to go along with two RBI and a run scored.
Saint Joseph's got three runs back in the bottom half of the first before the Minutewomen took advantage of an error in the second and a Kendra Allen RBI in the third to bring the score to 9-3 in UMass' favor. The Hawks went on to score eight in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth to pull ahead 13-9.
Kristina Day helped load the bases in the third inning with one of her two hits in the game, this one a single to center before Allen walked to load the bases. Amy Smith and Caroline Deem each brought in runs via sacrifice flies to bring the Minutewomen within two at 13-11 before the Hawks added four in their last trip to the plate in the sixth.
Game 2 - UMass 12, Saint Joseph's 9
UMass scored one run in the first inning of game two to mark the fourth straight game of the series in which they scored at least one in their first trip to the plate. Smith started off her four hit, three RBI game two with a RBI single to score Allen following a base hit of her own.
The Hawks answered back with one run in the second and four in the third to pull ahead 5-1 before the Minutewomen went on to score 11 runs in their final four trips to the plate, including three each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Jenna Bradley earned her first collegiate win in the circle for the Minutewomen as she went the distance in game two. After falling behind 5-1, Bradley and the UMass defense allowed just three base runners in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as the offense climbed back into the game.
Hannah Bunker's RBI single following a Deem base hit started the scoring in the fourth. Another run scored during Bunker's at-bat on a throwing error before Bella Pantoja doubled to center to score Bunker and pull UMass within a run.
Allen opened the fifth inning with a walk, one of three for her on the day to go along with a pair of hits as she reached base in all five trips to the plate. She went on to score on an error before Caroline Videtto's RBI single put UMass back in front, 6-5. Alyssa Lyon came through with a pinch-hit RBI single through the right side to extend the lead to two.
That lead blossomed to five in the sixth inning after Smith's third hit of the game drove in a run before Deem singled through the left side to score Allen. Shields added the third run of the sixth with a sacrifice fly. The Minutewomen added two more on three hits in the seventh, beginning with Smith's fourth hit and third RBI before Shields doubled down the left field line for her second RBI of game two.
Saint Joseph's cut the UMass lead down to three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Shields helped limit the damage by throwing out the runner at the plate for the second out of the inning before a groundout ended the game with a final score of 12-9.
The Minutewomen return home to Sortino Field on Tuesday when they play host to Maine in a noon doubleheader.
