Softball Takes Game One In Doubleheader Split With Maine

Kendra Allen and Kristina Day combined for nine RBI in the game one victory.
Game 1 – UMass 15, Maine 6 (6 inn.)
Allen picked up her first RBI of the opening game in her first trip to the plate, driving in Bella Pantoja with a RBI double to right field. The Minutewomen added another run in the second inning on a Maine error to pull ahead 2-0 before the Black Bears tied it up with two runs in the fourth.
Kristina Day's first RBI of game one came by way of a bases loaded walk as UMass regained the lead at 3-2 in the fifth. Day finished the game a perfect 2-of-2 at the plate with two runs scored, four RBI and two walks.
Maine scored four runs in the top half of the fifth inning to take a 6-3 lead over the Minutewomen before an eight-run fifth inning put UMass in control with an 11-6 lead. Day added another RBI on a single to left field with the bases loaded to give UMass the lead at 7-6 before Allen followed with a two RBI single through the right side to give UMass a 9-6 advantage. Amy Smith and Caroline Videtto each added RBIs in the inning to help UMass take an 11-6 lead into the sixth.
Day opened up the sixth by recording her third and fourth RBI of the game, these coming on a two-RBI double to left field. Allen followed up with a two-run shot the following at bat to add two more and secure UMass a 15-6 win in six innings of play. The homer capped off a 3-for-5 game at the plate for Allen as she finished with five RBI and scored a pair of runs.
Jessie DiPasquale picked up her sixth win of the season in the circle for the Minutewomen as she tossed all six innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out five.
Game 2 - Maine 9, UMass 4
Maine jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two before the Minutewomen responded with three runs in the bottom half of the second inning to pull within a run.
UMass started the second inning with a pair of walks before a Hannah Bunker loaded the bases with one down. Pantoja came through later with a two-out, bases clearing stand up triple to right center field to give her three RBI and pull the Minutewomen within a run.
The Black Bears came back with two runs in the top of the third to go up 6-3 before adding a run in the fifth inning and two in the sixth.
Abby Lamson picked up a pinch-hit RBI single in the sixth inning, scoring Jules Shields in the process for the final run of the game that brought it to a 9-4 final. Shields scored a pair of runs in the game for UMass while Payge Suggs picked up a pair of hits.
The Minutewomen remain home at Sortino Field this weekend when they welcome in La Salle for a pair of Atlantic 10 doubleheaders.
