Minutewomen Best Iowa State, 6-4

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball posted a 6-4 victory in extra innings against Iowa State to end the weekend at the Aggie Invitational I. The Minutewomen posted a 3-2 record to wrap 2017 tournament play.
Freshman Candace Denis started in the circle and pitched eight innings, striking out six batters and giving up seven hits.
UMass made the first move and put a run on the board in the top of the second with an RBI double from freshman Nicole Imhof, scoring sophomore Melissa Garcia after she reached second on a double. In the top of the fifth, UMass posted another two with the help of a triple from Denis, scoring senior Caitlyn Hickey. Sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha scored Denis on a sacrifice fly, giving the Minutewomen a 3-1 lead.
Iowa State tied it up in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. The tie-breaker rule was in effect, placing Denis on second. Stavinoha drove in Denis with an RBI single and, after two walks and a bases-loaded hit from Imhof, UMass took a 6-3 lead. Iowa State scored a single run in the bottom of the eighth but the Minutewomen secured three outs to end the game.
On Wed., March 15, the Minutewomen will face Lehigh at 1 p.m. PT/4 p.m. ET and Pacific at 6 p.m. PT/9 p.m. ET in Stockton, Calif.
