Minutewomen Take Two in Stockton

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts softball collected two victories on Wednesday in Stockton, California. The Minutewomen defeated Lehigh, 6-1, and followed it up with a 5-2 victory against hosting Pacific.
Game One
The Minutewomen defeated Lehigh, 6-1, in their first game of the day. Junior Meg Colleran started in the circle and pitched a complete game, allowing only four hits and striking out five batters.
UMass scored three runs in the first inning with singles from sophomore Kaitlyn Stavinoha and senior Ashton Wince. The Minutewomen scored individual runs in the second, fifth and seventh innings, and ended the game in a 6-1 victory.
Wince led UMass' offense, going two-for-three with a double and two RBI. Colleran also went two-for-three, scoring a run and driving in an RBI. Senior Caitlyn Hickey and freshmen Candace Denis and Nicole Imhof also picked up singles.
Game Two
UMass ended the day with a 5-2 victory over Pacific. Denis started on the mound and pitched seven innings, striking out three batters and giving up four hits and two earned runs.
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning, where sophomore Kaycee Carbone drove in Denis with a single to center field. Pacific fired back and posted two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
Denis blasted a three-run homer to drive in freshman Kate Dennis and sophomore Erin Stacevicz, giving UMass the 4-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. An RBI-single from Carbone in the top of the seventh drove in Denis, and Pacific was unable to recover from the 5-2 deficit.
The Minutewomen will host their first home series March 25-26 with games against St. Bonaventure. Saturday game times are 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. with Sunday's finale at 12 p.m.
