Hannah McColgan earned the promotion after contributing to the Minutewomen’s success in the last three years.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts tennis head coach Juancarlos Nunez announced the promotion of Hannah McColgan to associate head coach on Tuesday afternoon. McColgan steps into her new role on the staff after serving under Nunez for the last three years at UMass as an assistant coach, and has received a one year extension.

"Hannah has had a tremendous impact on our team since she arrived," said Nunez. "We are a better team today because of all her work and dedication to our program. All our players have improved under her guidance. I am grateful to work with her, and I am excited to continue taking our team to greater heights alongside her."

In her three seasons with the Massachusetts tennis program, McColgan combined for an overall record of 43-20 and a 15-2 combined conference record. McColgan was named the ITA New England Region Assistant Coach of the Year in both the 2023-24 season and the 2025-26 season. She became the third assistant coach to garner the honor in the 2023-24 year and first since 2013, when Nunez tabbed the award, while Celeste Frey held the honor in 2006. McColgan then became the first assistant coach to collect the accolade twice in program history.

"I would like to thank Juancarlos, Ryan [Bamford], and the athletic administration for their trust and support," said McColgan. "I am honored to be promoted to Associate Head Coach and grateful for the opportunity to continue serving a program that means so much to me. Over the past three years, I have been fortunate to work alongside incredible student-athletes and staff, and I am excited to continue helping our student-athletes grow as people, students and competitors, while building on the strong culture and competing for championships. To do something I love every day in a place that challenges me to learn, lead, and grow is truly special. I am grateful for our student-athletes, staff, alumni, and the entire UMass community for making this experience so rewarding, and I look forward to what lies ahead. Go UMass!"

During the 2025-26 season, she aided the team to a 16-5 overall record, including a 7-1 mark in the team's first year in the Mid-American Conference. The Minutewomen went on an eight-match win streak from March 8-April 10, which included a six-match win streak in the league. McColgan guided UMass to a 2026 Regular Season Championships title, earning the No. 1 seed heading into the MAC Championships. It marked only the second time in program history Massachusetts clinched the No. 1-seed, while the team reached the conference semifinals for the 14th time in program history, and third with McColgan on staff.

The team went 12-7 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference during her second season with the program. The Minutewomen secured the No. 2 seed heading into the A-10 Championships for the ninth time in program history and the semifinals of the league championships for the 13th time in program history.

Her first season at Massachusetts, McColgan guided the team to a 15-8 overall record and a 4-1 mark in the A-10 Conference play during the 2023-24 season. The campaign marked the third time in program history that UMass claimed the league's championship title and reached the NCAA Tournament. The Minutewomen completed their home schedule with a 7-1 record and went on a four-match win streak to finish out the regular season. Massachusetts continued its win streak in the postseason with three consecutive victories in the A-10 Tournament, before falling to No. 2 Stanford in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament.

Throughout her time at Massachusetts, McColgan has seen two Minutewomen earn conference Player of the Year awards, with Danielle Hack winning A-10 Most Outstanding Performer of the Year in 2024 and Ella Faessler picking up the MAC Player of the Year honor in 2026. She also saw two ITA Senior Player of the Year and two ITA Most Improved Player honors.

Since McColgan has joined the staff, Massachusetts has been ranked in the Final ITA Regional Rankings all three seasons. The team earned its first ranking in program history in the 2023-24 season, ranking No. 6 in New England. The Minutewomen were then ranked No. 10 in the region for the 2024-25 season and tied the highest ranking of No. 6 in the 2025-26 year.
