April 09, 2025 | Softball
STORRS, Conn. -- Massachusetts (9-23, 3-6 A-10) fell short against UConn (22-13, 9-3 BEC) on Wednesday, surrendering a 10-4 decision on the road.
Riley Kairer and Lydia Castro led the bats for Massachusetts, each going 2-4 at the plate. Castro built off of her three-hit performance last week, opening the scoring for UMass with an RBI single to bring home Riain Keefe in the starting frame. A three-run home run in the bottom of the third would turn the tides in favor of Connecticut, as the Huskies took a 3-1 lead heading into the fourth. Sophia Thormeyer brought the Minutewomen within one in the top of the fifth, sneaking an RBI single into left field to score Taylor Richardson. Massachusetts struggled to hinder the UConn offense in the bottom frame, surrendering four runs as the Huskies extended their lead to 7-2. The Minutewomen cut into the deficit in the top of the sixth when Kairer crossed the plate on a wild pitch to make it a 7-3 ball game. Brooke Musch brought home Grace Colucci off a sacrifice fly as UMass brought the score within three. The Huskies would tack on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, jumping out to a 10-4 lead. Massachusetts was unable to make up the difference in the top of the seventh, dropping the matchup 10-4.
