Softball Splits Two-Game Series vs. St. Bonaventure

AMHERST, Mass. -- Massachusetts (10-24, 4-7 A-10) split a doubleheader with St. Bonaventure (5-29, 1-14 A-10) on Monday afternoon.
The Minutewomen dropped the first game of the day in a 4-3 decision after leading 3-2 at the end of the third. The Bonnies struck first in the top of the opening frame, scoring on an RBI single with two outs. Massachusetts answered with two runs in the bottom half of the first after Lydia Castro scored Riain Keefe on a sacrifice fly, followed by Riley Kairer singling into center field as Lily Woodworth scored on a throwing error. Both sides traded unearned runs in the third due to errors, making it a 3-2 score after three. A two-run home run by St. Bonaventure's Ahearn swung the momentum of the game in what would end up being the game-winning score. UMass would tally two hits in the bottom of the seventh to bring the tying run into scoring position, however were unable to bat the runner in as SBU closed the game out 4-3. Julianne Bolton struck out five across four innings in the start, surrendering two earned runs on the day. Natalee Horton threw three innings of relief, striking out two batters and shutting out St. Bonaventure during her stint. Odyssey Torres went 3-4 at the plate, followed by a 2-3 performance by Brooke Musch including a triple in the second inning.
Massachusetts answered with a 4-1 victory in the second game of Monday's doubleheader, led by a strong one-run performance in the circle by Olivia Cutuli and Hannah Streicher. Riley Kairer opened the scoring for UMass in game two, singling into center field as Sophia Thormeyer crossed the plate on a throwing error. Katharine Heslin helped tack on two more in the bottom of the fifth, reaching on a fielder's choice to score Kairer while Woodworth reached home on another throwing error. The Bonnies got a run back in the sixth on an RBI single, answered by Woodworth in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single of her own to score Musch and secure a 4-1 lead heading into the seventh. Streicher would close the door on St. Bonaventure, striking out three of the four batters faced in the top of the final frame to earn her first save of the season. Cutuli threw 5.1 innings on the day, tallying three strikeouts while only giving up one earned run. Streicher pitched the remaining 1.2 innings, retiring four of the seven batters faced via strikeout.
