Massachusetts Softball Drops Pair Against Loyola On Friday

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader against Loyola Chicago on Friday by scores of 7 to 2 and 8 to 7 (8 inn.), respectively. The Minutewomen now sit at 10-21 on the season (2-8 in conference play), while Loyola improves to 14-17 overall and 8-3 in conference play.
GAME ONE - Loyola 7, UMass 2
The Ramblers took an early lead as they recorded three runs in the first inning. They recorded a single tally in both the third and fourth innings before the Minutewomen responded. Chloe Whittier hit an RBI single to plate Emily Whelan and put UMass on the board at the bottom of the fifth. Bella Pantoja then recorded an RBI when Giana Wameling reached home. Loyola scored the final run of the contest in the top of the sixth to wrap up the game.
Jessie DiPasquale got the start in the circle, recording a strikeout in 5.2 innings pitched before Julianne Bolton took over, throwing the remaining 1.1 innings.
GAME TWO - Loyola 8, UMass 7 (8 inn.)
After a scoreless first and second innings, Loyola recorded a home run to take the lead at the top of the third. However, Massachusetts responded, looking to even the series when they logged four runs in the bottom of the third. Wameling kicked off the successful inning with a bunt to get her on-base, but a throwing error allowed her to reach third. Olivia Packard and Sarah Keagy each reached home off the error. Then, Pantoja hit an RBI triple to score Wameling before Jules Shields logged an RBI single and scored Pantoja.
The fourth inning was quiet and scoring did not resume until the fifth inning, when the Ramblers notched another home run to decrease their deficit. Pantoja then hit an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to score Whittier. At the top of the sixth, Loyola logged yet another home run on the day before scoring two in the seventh inning to force an eighth.
At the top of the eighth, the Ramblers plated three runs. The Minutewomen looked to catch up with O. Packard picking up an RBI when Shields made it home and Whelan hitting an RBI single to score Taylor Richardson, but could not score the tying run.
Natalee Horton threw all 8.0 innings in the circle, logging three strikeouts and allowing 13 hits on the day.
Massachusetts softball hosts Loyola Chicago once more tomorrow, Saturday, April 8, with first pitch scheduled for noon.
