Richardson's First Career Home Run Lifts Minutewomen Over Marist, 6-5, In Second Game Of Double Header

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts softball team split their double header against Marist on Wednesday afternoon, dropping the first contest, 9 to 3, while winning the second, 6 to 5. The Minutewomen now sit at 12-22 on the season, while Marist sits at 17-20. Taylor Richardson highlighted the day, logging her first career RBI and home run as a Minutewoman.
GAME ONE - Marist 9, UMass 3
The Red Foxes struck first in the top of the first with an RBI sacrifice fly before Chloe Whittier homered, giving UMass a two-run lead as she sent herself and Giana Wameling home. Marist then scored six more runs from the third to the sixth innings before Richardson logged an RBI when an error allowed Jules Shields to make it home safely.
Julianne Bolton began the contest in the circle, recording a strikeout in 4.1 innings pitched before being relieved by Jenna Bradley, who threw two strikeouts and only allowed two hits in the remaining 2.2 innings of work.
GAME TWO - UMass 6, Marist 5
Massachusetts struck first in the second contest of the day when Abby Lamson logged an RBI single, scoring Whittier. Sarah Keagy then recorded an RBI walk to bring Bella Pantoja home to wrap up the first inning. In the second, Pantoja hit an RBI double to score Wameling. The Red Foxes scored a run in the third and hit a 3 RBI home run in the fourth to gain the lead for the first time in the game. Keagy tallied another RBI on the day when she scored Shields in the fifth inning. Richardson tallied another RBI with a single, allowing Lamson to plate another run and extend the UMass lead. Marist tied the contest up in the top of the sixth, but Richardson responded at the bottom of the seventh with a walk off home run to earn the Minutewomen the victory.
Natalee Horton collected her fifth win of the season, throwing all 7.0 innings of the contest. The freshman struck out seven batters and allowed three earned runs during her campaign in the circle.
The Minutewomen look to continue home conference play on Saturday, April 15 and Sunday, April 16 as they host the Saint Bonaventure Bonnies before wrapping up their home stand on Wednesday, April 19 as they take on the Boston University Terriers.
