Massachusetts Softball Splits On Day Two Of Dugout Club Classic

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The University of Massachusetts softball team continued play in the Dugout Club Classic on Saturday, splitting in their matches against Georgia Southern and Colgate.
GAME ONE - Georgia Southern 4, UMass 3
The Eagles struck first at the top of the second as Emily Greek reached home on an Olivia Creamer RBI single. Georgia Southern then loaded the bases with one out remaining but the Minutewomen did not allow the Eagles to extend their lead.
At the bottom of the third, Bella Pantoja sent Taylor Richardson home on an RBI single to tie the game up. The Minutewomen then took their first lead of the day in the fourth when Chloe Whittier plated a run off Jules Shields' RBI single. Shields then reached home just two plays later when Grace Cadden singled to left field.
The Minutewomen had another opportunity to extend their lead in the fifth with runners on second and third base but could not capitalize.
At the top of the sixth, Creamer reached home to lessen the Eagles' deficit to one run.
The Eagles then scored twice in the seventh to win the contest. Janai Conklin hit a home run to left field to tie the game at three early in the inning before Creamer hit a sacrifice fly to allow Janiyah Strong to score the game-winning run.
Natalee Horton began the game in the circle, recording one strikeout and allowing eight hits in 6.1 innings of work. Julianne Bolton finished up the game, allowing one hit in the remaining 0.2 innings.
GAME TWO - UMass 6, Colgate 2
Whittier plated the first run of the contest, making it home off Shields' single in the first to put UMass on the board early. After a scoreless second and third, Emily Whelan hit an RBI double to allow Jordyn Graime and Cadden to reach home at the bottom of the fourth to extend UMass' lead. The Minutewomen also had a strong sixth inning, with Cadden, Jenna Bradley, and Pantoja scoring one run apiece.
Colgate responded at the top of the seventh, scoring their first two runs of the day. However, the Minutewomen successfully closed out the inning and secured the victory.
Bradley recorded her first win of the season in the circle, throwing two strikeouts and allowing two earned runs in 7.0 innings of work.
Massachusetts will conclude action at the Dugout Club Classic tomorrow, Sunday, March 5 at 9 a.m. as they rematch Colgate in their final game of the tournament.
