Massachusetts Softball Drops Two Against #15 Georgia, RV Boise State

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts softball team continued play at the Black and Gold Classic on Saturday, dropping their first game of the day against the Georgia Bulldogs, 13 to 3, and falling to the Boise State Broncos, 7 to 4, at the UCF Softball Complex.
Game One – Georgia 13, UMass 3 (5 inn.)
The Minutewomen opened up scoring on the day, with Chloe Whittier, Sarah Keagy, and Jenna Bradley plating one run apiece. Bradley drove an RBI single to first base to allow Whittier to score, while Keagy plated her run off a wild pitch. Bradley reached home on an error off a hit by Abby Lamson.
Georgia opened up the third inning with a home run, followed by twelve unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings for the Bulldogs to win the game. Sydney Chambley had five RBIs on the day while Ellie Armistead had three in the contest.
Julianne Bolton put in four innings of work, recording two strikeouts, and Jenna Bradley finished out the game in the circle.
Game Two – Boise State 7, UMass 4
Natalee Horton had her first start in the circle as a Minutewoman, opening the game on a positive note by escaping the first inning scoreless after being in a bases loaded, no outs situation. Horton worked for 3.1 innings, recording two strikeouts and allowing four earned runs before Jessie DiPasquale replaced her on the mound. DiPasquale threw 3.2 innings, recording five strikeouts and allowing three earned runs.
Boise State clubbed four home runs to plate seven runs on the day. The Minutewomen entered the scoring with Sarah Keagy crossing the plate on a hit by Angie Rama in the bottom of the fourth inning. Bella Pantoja then returned home when Chloe Whittier hit a sacrificial fly ball to right field in the sixth inning.
The MInutewomen did not give up, entering the final inning at-bat looking to even the score. In the final play of the game, Pantoja hit an RBI single to the catcher. While Giana Wameling tried to advance to second base, Abby Packard and Payge Suggs had time to tack on the final two runs of the contest.
Massachusetts recorded seven hits on the day against the Broncos, two of which were extra base hits.
The Minutewomen wrap up at the Black and Gold Classic tomorrow, Sunday Feb. 12, at 11 a.m. as they take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in their final game of opening weekend.
