UMass Defeated By George Washington In Saturday Doubleheader

Julianne Bolton struck out five with one run allowed in eight innings of action in game one for the Minutewomen.
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts softball team fell to George Washington in Saturday's doubleheader at Sortino Field. The Minutewomen came up just short in a 1-0 eight inning loss before falling in game two, 11-1.
Game One – George Washington 1, UMass 0 (8 inn.)
Julianne Bolton threw all eight innings in game one and finished with five strikeouts and just one earned run allowed in the extra inning affair. Bolton found her groove after a one-out single in the first inning, holding GW without a hit over the next five innings and change before the Colonials recorded their second hit with two outs in the sixth inning.
Chloe Whittier recorded the lone UMass base hit in game one, a leadoff single in the second inning before stealing second to move into scoring position.
Sierra Lange started the eighth inning with a double to left center field before scoring the game's only run after an Alessandra Ponce RBI double to make it a 1-0 contest. Lange also threw eight innings in the circle for GW, striking out 10 with no walks.
Game Two – George Washington 11, UMass 1
UMass finished game two with five base hits, led by two from Emily Whelan while Bella Pantoja, Amy Smith and Jules Shields added hits in the doubleheader finale. Whelan's first hit in the second inning loaded the bases with two down, but the runners were left stranded.
Shields came through with a RBI single to right center field in the third inning, driving in a pinch running Giana Wameling after a Smith single and a Whittier walk. Shields' RBI pulled the Minutewomen within a run at 2-1 after GW broke open the scoring in the top half of the third.
The Colonials plated five runs on five hits in the fifth inning to make it a 7-1 ballgame behind a Maddie Spell grand slam. GW added a run in the sixth inning before plating three on three hits and an error in the seventh to bring the score to an 11-1 final.
The Minutewomen and Colonials resume play tomorrow at Sortino Field at noon with the regular season finale.
