Softball Drops Game Three At Dayton, 6-3

Bella Pantoja and Jules Shields each finished with a pair of hits at Dayton on Sunday.
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Massachusetts softball team came up short in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Dayton, 6-3. The Minutewomen finished the afternoon with seven hits led by two each from Bella Pantoja and Jules Shields.
Pantoja got a one-run first inning for the Minutewomen started with a leadoff single before swiping second base and moving over to third on an Amy Smith single. Chloe Whittier drove in Pantoja with a RBI single to right field to put UMass ahead 1-0.
The Minutewomen loaded the bases in the third inning with no outs, leading to a Kendra Allen walk that brought home the first of two runs in the inning. Shields following with a RBI on a fielder's choice to put UMass ahead 3-0. Shields finished her day 2-for-4 at the plate with a RBI.
Dayton scored six unanswered runs, beginning with two runs on two hits and an error in the third inning to cut the UMass lead to one. The Flyers used a two-out base hit in the fourth inning to plate a pair and take their first lead of the day at 4-3 before adding a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to bring the score to a 6-3 final.
Jenna Bradley opened the game in the circle for the Minutewomen and got out of an early bases loaded jam in the first inning with three consecutive outs. Jessie DiPasquale entered in relief and surrendered one of two earned runs against the Minutewomen on the day in 2.1 innings of work while Julianne Bolton closed things out.
The Minutewomen are back in action for a midweek doubleheader on Wednesday at Stony Brook and return home to Sortino Field on Saturday for Senior Day at noon against George Washington.
