Softball Drops Pair On Opening Day Of Bulldog Classic

Bella Pantoja posted four hits on the day while Chloe Whittier and Kristina Day each homered.

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Massachusetts softball team dropped a pair of games on the opening day of the Bulldog Classic at Turner Softball Stadium. The Minutewomen fell to Appalachian State 9-1 in their first game of the weekend and were defeated by No. 16-ranked Georgia in the nightcap, 8-2.
 
Game 1 – Appalachian State 9, UMass 1
Bella Pantoja and Payge Suggs each finished with three hits to lead the Minutewomen in their opening game of the Bulldog Classic. Pantoja opened the day with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the first and scored the following at-bat as Suggs reached on an error to make it a 1-1 ballgame. The duo helped load the bases in the third inning with consecutive hits before Kendra Allen was hit by a pitch with two-down.
 
Appalachian State scored eight unanswered runs to close out the game, starting things off with a run in the second and two in the third to go ahead 4-1. The Mountaineers put two more on the board in the fourth and added three on two hits and an error in the seventh to make it a 9-1 final.
 
Jenna Bradley started the game in the circle for UMass and surrendered six runs in 3.1 innings of work before Julianne Bolton entered in relief and finished with six strikeouts and no earned runs allowed in 3.2 innings of action.
 
Game 2 - #16 Georgia 8, UMass 2
Georgia took a 3-0 lead in the second inning with a three run Aniyah Black home run with two outs before UMass answered with a home run of their own in the fourth inning.
 
Chloe Whittier hit her second of the year to put UMass on the board in the top of the fourth, a solo shot to left field to make it 3-1 in favor of the Bulldogs.
 
After Georgia added one more in the bottom half, Kristina Day recorded her second long ball of the season in the fifth with a solo home run to left field to lead off the inning.
 
The Bulldogs came back with four runs on three hits and an error in the bottom half of the fifth to make it 8-2.
 
Jessie DiPasquale tossed six innings for the Minutewomen and finished with three strikeouts and three earned runs allowed.
