PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Massachusetts softball team defeated Saint Joseph's 3-1 in game one at the SJU Softball Field before falling to the Hawks in game two on Friday. The Minutewomen and the Hawks resume their four-game series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
Game 1 – UMass 3, Saint Joseph's 1
The Minutewomen put together a pair of runs in their first trip to the plate to build an 2-0 early lead. Bella Pantoja picked up a leadoff walk and moved all the way over to third on a sacrifice bunt from Kristina Day to set up a Kendra Allen RBI. Caroline Deem followed with one of her two hits on the game, hammering a triple down the right field line to score Amy Smith all the way from first.
Jessie DiPasquale went the distance in the circle for the Minutewomen, finishing with nine strikeouts seven innings pitched while allowing just four hits and no earned runs. The Hawks looked to break into the scoring column in the sixth after picking up their second hit of the game followed by a walk before three straight outs ended the scoring threat.
Caroline Videtto finished game one with a 3-for-4 effort, including three straight to start the game to give her seven hits in seven trips to the plate dating back to game two of the Rhode Island doubleheader, Videtto opened the sixth with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a fielding error before Pantoja drove her in to put UMass ahead 3-0.
Saint Joseph's threatened again in their final trip to the plate with back-to-back hits to open up the inning. A strikeout and a Day to Pantoja out at third followed prior to the Hawks scoring their lone run on a UMass fielding error.
Game 2 - Saint Joseph's 9, UMass 3
UMass once again jumped out to a two-run lead, opening up the first inning of game two with a 2-0 advantage. Saint Joseph's tied things up with two runs on three hits in the bottom half of the first before adding another run on two hits and an error in the second to go ahead 3-2.
Jules Shields knotted the contest at 3-3 in the fourth inning after a Hawk error extended the frame, coming through with a RBI triple that found some space in shallow right field to score Emily Whelan.
