Minutewomen Walk-Off Game One, Sweep Saturday Doubleheader Against La Salle

Kendra Allen hit a two-RBI walk-off triple in the 5-4 game one win while Kristina Day added four hits in the doubleheader.
AMHERST, Mass. – Kendra Allen hit a two-RBI triple to send UMass to a 5-4 walk-off win over La Salle on Saturday at Sortino Field in game one before going on to win game two in five innings, 9-0. UMass used an eight-run fourth-inning in game two to come away with the doubleheader sweep.
Game 1 – UMass 5, La Salle 4
La Salle took a two-run lead in the second inning of game one after a UMass error extended the top half with two outs.
The Minutewomen answered in their very next trip to the plate with two runs in the bottom half as Hannah Bunker put UMass in the scoring column with a sacrifice fly to center field that brought in Jules Shields. UMass used a double steal to tie it up at 2-2, with Payge Suggs stealing second to force a throw that allowed Caroline Videtto to score from third.
Kristina Day gave the Minutewomen their first lead of the afternoon with a solo shot to left field in the fifth-inning that put UMass ahead 3-2 before La Salle took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning. Day helped the UMass start the bottom half strong with a double to right center field that moved Bella Pantoja into scoring position with no outs. Day finished game one 2-of-4 at the plate with a RBI and two runs scored and added two more hits and a run in game two.
Allen came through the following at-bat, sending a two-RBI triple to center field to bring in Pantoja and Day for the walk-off win.
Game 2 – UMass 9, La Salle 0 (5 inn.)
Jenna Bradley tossed her first career shutout in the game two win over the Explorers, throwing 5.0 innings while surrendering just two hits and one walk on her way to earning the win in the circle.
Shields led the way for the UMass offense with two hits in two trips to the plate to go along with two runs scored. The sophomore opened the scoring in the second-inning with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Amy Smith. Suggs drove in Shields for one of those runs to start off an eight-run fourth-inning with a RBI infield single.
After Pantoja picked up a RBI single to score Suggs, Smith picked up a two-RBI single to center field to bring in two more to extend the lead to five runs. Smith finished game two 1-for-1 with two RBI, two runs scored and a pair of walks.
Caroline Deem followed with a RBI single of her own before Shields' two-RBI double to left pushed the advantage to eight runs. Videtto added the eighth and final run of the inning with a RBI double to the right center gap that brought home Shields.
The four-game series against the Explorers wraps up tomorrow at Sortino Field with a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
