Softball Sweeps Opening Day Doubleheader At Upstate Classic

The Minutewomen opened the day with a 6-2 win over Buffalo before defeating Maryland Eastern Shore in five, 11-0.
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Massachusetts softball team opened up its regular season with a pair of wins at the Upstate Classic on Friday, defeating Buffalo 6-2 before grabbing an 11-0 run-rule win over Maryland Eastern Shore in game two. Caroline Videtto paced the offense on the day with eight RBI on a 5-of-7 showing at the plate while Dani Ellis and Kendra Allen each hit two-run home runs.

Game 1 – UMass 6, Buffalo 2
The Minutewomen plated a pair of runs in the opening two innings of the game one win over the Bulls (2-4), beginning with a two-run home run to left field by Ellis in the first to score Videtto. Videtto finished the first game with a pair of hits, including a RBI single in the second before Amy Smith walked home a run to put UMass ahead 4-0.

Allen picked up a two-run shot of her own in the fifth inning to stretch the lead to six runs, sending one over the wall in center field to bring in Juliana Shields. Allen finished the contest with a pair of hits to go along with two RBI and two runs scored.

Kiara Oliver picked up the win in the circle for the Minutewomen, striking out eight while allowing four hits in 6.0 innings of work. Kenadee Rausch closed things out for UMass in the bottom of the seventh as she struck out three in the frame.

Game 2 – UMass 11, Maryland Eastern Shore 0 (5 inn.)
Videtto went a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate in the game two win over Maryland Eastern Shore, driving in seven runs to tie the UMass mark for second-most RBI in a single game. The junior hit her first career home run in the second inning, sending a grand slam to center field to put UMass ahead 5-0. Videtto came up big in another bases loaded opportunity in the third, clearing the bases with a three-RBI double that moved the lead to nine runs.

Amy Smith was one of three Minutewomen to record multiple hits as eight different batters picked up base hits on the day. Smith opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with a RBI single on her way to finishing 2-of-2 at the plate.

Allen capped things off by driving in the 11th and final run of the day for UMass with a RBI that brought in Abby Lamson in the fourth. Hannah Bunker added a pair of hits for the Minutewomen on 2-of-3 at the plate with a pair of runs scored.

Quinn Breidenbach tossed 4.0 innings of one-hit softball on her way to picking up the win while striking out five before Jessie DiPasquale closed things out in the fifth and final inning.

The Minutewomen will continue weekend play tomorrow when they take on host USC Upstate at 1 p.m. before facing Oakland in the final game of the weekend at 5 p.m.
