Softball Opens Up 2020 Campaign With Four Games at Upstate Classic

The UMass season opener is set for tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. against Buffalo.

Opening Weekend
UMass opens up the 2020 campaign with four games this weekend at the Upstate Classic in Spartanburg, S.C. hosted by USC Upstate. The weekend opens up with a matchup against Buffalo (2-3) before the Minutewomen matchup against Maryland Eastern Shore (0-5) in the day cap. Saturday's first game of the day is against the hosts USC Upstate, who currently have a 4-1 record after picking up a doubleheader sweep against North Carolina Central at home on Wednesday. Weekend action concludes Saturday against Oakland, who also heads into their first tournament of the year this weekend.

The Returners
The Minutewomen return 11 players from the 2019 squad, including all three pitchers from a season ago. Junior Kiara Oliver led the way with a team-best 2.32 ERA to go along with 116 strikeouts while senior Quinn Breidenbach tossed 112.1 innings on her way to finishing the year with a 12-5 mark. Junior Hannah Bunker posted the second-best on-base percentage on the squad last year with .461 while adding a .359 average on 46 hits.

The Freshmen
UMass will have six freshmen on the opening day roster when they take the field tomorrow, featuring a pair of outfielders and infielders along with a pitcher. The class consists of Emily Whelan (2B/OF), Juliana Shields (OF), Abby Lamson (IF/C), Jessie DiPasquale (P), Caroline Deem (1B/3B) and Samantha Torres (C/OF).
