SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Massachusetts softball team dropped a pair of games in its final day of action at the Upstate Classic on Saturday as they fell to the hosts USC Upstate 1-0 and Oakland 5-2 in the night cap.
Game 1 – USC Upstate 1, UMass 0
The Minutewomen out-hit USC Upstate seven to four in the opening game of the day, led by a pair of hits each from Samantha Torres, Amy Smith and Hannah Bunker.
UMass loaded up the bases in their final two trips to the plate, beginning in the sixth inning as Torres singled to start things off in the frame before Smith singled and Kristina Day drew a walk. Bunker reached base for the third time in three trips to the plate with one down in the seventh as UMass trailed 1-0. Caroline Videtto singled through the right side to move Bunker into scoring position prior to Torres singling to the left side to load the bases once again.
USC Upstate's lone run of the contest came in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Savannah Grigsby single up the middle to score Sarah Price.
Game 2 – Oakland 5, UMass 2
Oakland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on four hits as the Golden Grizzlies scored both runs with two outs in the frame. Jessie DiPasquale bounced back in the circle for the Minutewomen, picking up a strikeout with the bases loaded on her way to retiring five straight Oakland batters before a UMass error in the third. DiPasquale and the Minutewomen worked out of a bases loaded jam once again in the third as Bunker made a play at second to leave three stranded.
UMass trimmed the lead down to a run in the fifth inning after Juliana Shields was hit by a pitch and moved over to third on a pair of groundouts before scoring on a wild pitch with two outs.
Oakland went on to respond by scoring three runs on four hits in the fifth inning to pull ahead 5-1.
The Minutewomen added another run in the fifth inning on a Smith RBI double down the left field line that scored Samantha Torres from first and brought the score to a final, 5-2.
UMass returns to the field on Friday morning when they head to Greenville, N.C. for the Pirate Invitational.
