The Minutewomen bounced back from an extra-inning loss to Villanova with an 8-5 win over the Pirates.
CLEARWATER, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts softball team posted a season-high 12 hits in game two on Saturday to come away with an 8-5 victory of Seton Hall after falling to Villanova 4-1 in eight innings earlier in the afternoon. The Minutewomen (9-10 Overall) were led offensively by Riley Gregoire and Alyssa Lyon's four hits over the two games.
Game One – Villanova 4, UMass 1 (8 inn.) - Box Score
The first game of the afternoon was a pitcher's duel between Kiara Oliver and Villanova's Paige Rauch as both teams went scoreless through the first seven innings of action before the international tiebreak eighth inning.
Oliver struck out a new career-high 12 batters in 8.0 innings in the circle, striking out six batters through the first three innings including three in the third after Villanova put a runner 60-feet from the plate on a one-out triple. The sophomore followed a pair of back-to-back Wildcat hits to open the seventh by sending down three straight batters swinging to keep the score locked at 0-0. Oliver's 16 strikeouts so far this weekend moved her within seven strikeouts of moving into the top-15 on UMass' all-time strikeout leader list.
Villanova broke through for four runs in the top of the eighth inning, bringing in the international tiebreak run on a double that ricocheted off of Oliver to break the scoreless tie before a three-RBI double put the Wildcats ahead 4-0.
UMass threatened with the tying run at the plate in the bottom half of the inning after Erin Stacevicz brought in a pinch-running Jackie Kelley before Kaitlyn Stavinoha's second hit put a pair of runners on with two outs.
Melissa Garcia and Lyon both added a pair of hits each for the Minutewomen in the contest.
Game Two – UMass 8, Seton Hall 5 - Box Score
The Minutewomen scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning after trailing 5-4 to take an 8-4 lead into the sixth. Madison Gimpl started things off with a single to left center field before Lyon tallied one of her two hits in the ball game with a double down the left field line to bring in a run to tie things up at 5-5.
Hannah Bunker drove in two more runs to extend the lead to three after Stacevicz brought in one on a RBI single, sending a two-RBI single to left center field to score Stacevicz and Lyon for the final runs of the contest. Bunker finished the second game with two hits, two RBI and a walk in four trips to the plate.
UMass answered Seton Hall nearly every inning after falling behind 2-0 on a two-run home run in the top of the first inning for the Pirates. Gregoire's first of three hits in the second game started off a streak of three straight UMass hits, ending with a Kaitlyn Stavinoha RBI single through the right side.
After an error led to Seton Hall's third run of the afternoon, the Minutewomen took their first lead of the contest with a three-run bottom of the third inning to go up 4-3. Melissa Garcia drove in Stavinoha with a RBI single before Gimpl's first of two hits brought in two more on a two-RBI single through the left side.
Seton Hall added a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, first on a solo home run in the fourth before Kenadee Rausch came into the circle in relief on her way to recording her third win of the season to move to 3-1. Rausch tossed 3.2 innings while striking out three and allowing one run, working out of a jam after the Pirates put a pair of runners in scoring position with one out in the seventh inning.
UMass wraps up weekend play tomorrow morning with a 9 a.m. matchup against Western Michigan at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
