Minutewomen Drop Pair Of Contests To Open USF-Clearwater Tournament

March 08, 2019 | Softball

UMass continues weekend play tomorrow with a doubleheader against Villanova and Seton Hall in Clearwater.

TAMPA, Fla. Kaycee Carbone tallied four hits in a pair of games as the University of Massachusetts fell to No. 20-ranked Wisconsin 8-0 in five innings and host USF 7-1 on the opening day of the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase at the USF Softball Stadium.

Game One - #20/23 Wisconsin 8, UMass 0 (5 inn.) - Box Score
Wisconsin jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two trips to the plate, scoring in the opening frame on a leadoff home run before adding three more in the second inning.

Quinn Breidenbach entered the game in relief with a pair of runners on and no outs in the bottom half of the second, working three straight outs to leave a pair of Badger runners stranded. The junior held Wisconsin off the board in the next two innings before the Badgers scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win.

Offensively, UMass tallied four of its five hits in the first two innings but left a runner stranded in scoring position both times. Riley Gregoire singled with one down in the opening inning while Madison Gimpl came up with a single to put runners on the corners and Gregoire 60-feet from home. Alyssa Lyon and Hannah Bunker each added a hit for the Minutewomen.

Game Two – USF 7, UMass 1 - Box Score
Carbone picked up a pair of extra-base hits in three trips to the plate in the second game on her way to finishing the day a perfect 4-of-4, sparking the lone UMass run of the contest with a one-out single to right field with one down with the fourth inning. Hannah Bunker followed with a RBI single, sending the first pitch of her at-bat up the middle to drive in Carbone.

The Bulls struck first in the first inning with a run after a pair of two-out hits to go along with a walk before adding two in the third to go ahead 3-0 before Bunker's RBI in the top of the fourth cut the lead to two runs at 3-1. USF went on to add two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to bring the score to a final 7-1.

Danielle Ellis added a pinch-hit single in the top of the seventh inning while Gregoire and Melissa Garcia each added hits for a UMass team that finished with seven in the ball game.

The Minutewomen continue play in Florida tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader against Villanova and Seton Hall beginning at 1 p.m. in Clearwater, Fla.
