Minutewomen Split Pair At Georgia Classic, Shutout Belmont In 7-0 Win

Madison Gimpl went 2-for-2 with four RBI at the plate while Kiara Oliver struck out seven in the win.
ATHENS, Ga. – Madison Gimpl paced the UMass offense with four RBI and a pair of doubles as the Minutewomen opened up the Georgia Softball Classic with a 7-0 shutout win of Belmont before falling to No. 8-ranked Georgia 8-0 in the final game of the evening in five innings. The Minutewomen continue play tomorrow against Bryant and Georgia in a doubleheader beginning at 9 a.m.
Game One – UMass 7, Belmont 0 - Box Score
Gimpl led the way for the UMass offense in the opening game of the weekend, going 2-for-2 at the plate with four RBI and a pair of doubles in the win.
Amy Smith opened up the scoring for the Minutewomen in their first at-bat of the contest, sending a RBI single to shallow right field with the bases loaded. Smith finished the game with a hit and a pair of RBI while reaching base three times.
Gimpl followed with her first of four RBI, getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to put UMass ahead 2-0 after the top of the first.
Erin Stacevicz opened up the second inning with a single to center field for one of her two hits on the game after Alyssa Lyon was hit by a pitch to open the frame. Riley Gregoire went 2-of-3 at the plate, including a single to load the bases for Kaycee Carbone, who brought in the third run of the afternoon on another hit-by-pitch. Smith brought in the final of the inning on a walk to put UMass up 4-0.
Gimpl's first RBI double with the bases loaded brought in two more runs for the Minutewomen as the junior sent a double to the gap in deep right center field. Gimpl added the seventh and final run in the top of the seventh inning, this time finding the gap in left center field to bring in Smith as Gimpl reached base safely in all four of her plate appearances.
Kiara Oliver picked up her first win of the season in the circle as she pitched six innings of shutout softball, striking out seven batters while allowing just four hits in the win. Quinn Breidenbach closed things out in the bottom of the seventh, striking out a pair to leave two Belmont runners stranded in scoring position.
Game Two - #8 Georgia 8, UMass 0 (5 innings) - Box Score
The host Bulldogs opened up the final contest of the day with a six run first inning on six hits and an error to pull ahead 6-0.
The Minutewomen settled in defensively after the first frame as Breidenbach allowed just two baserunners over the next three innings while sending Georgia down in order a third inning that was highlighted by a sliding grab in left field by Carbone.
Georgia secured the win in bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run off the bat of Savana Sikes that was just inside of the foul pole in left field.
