February 23, 2019 | Softball
Madison Gimpl and Kaitlyn Stavinoha each drove in a run in a 2-1 win over Bryant to start the day.
ATHENS, Ga. – UMass scored a pair of unanswered runs in a 2-1 comeback win over Bryant in the opening game Saturday as Madison Gimpl drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Minutewomen their second win this weekend. Erin Stacevicz led the way at the plate for UMass with a pair of hits in the win over Bryant while adding a base hit against No. 8-ranked Georgia in a 4-0 loss.
Game One – UMass 2, Bryant 1 - Box Score
Kenadee Rausch tossed 7.0 innings on her way to moving to 2-1 on the season, striking out a career-high seven batters in the win. Rausch found her groove after allowing a single unearned Bryant run to come across in the first inning, coming up with a key strikeout in the fourth to leave a runner stranded 60 feet from the plate before leaving another stranded after a leadoff walk in the sixth.
Stacevicz made the biggest play of the morning defensively in the top of the sixth inning, tracking down a base hit to the gap in left center with no outs before throwing to the cutoff Kaitlyn Stavinoha as the shortstop threw home to Gimpl in time to get the out and preserve the one run lead.
Offensively, Stacevicz paced the UMass offense with a 2-of-3 showing at the plate as the leadoff batter while scoring the game-winning run on a Gimpl sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the sixth. Riley Gregoire followed Stacevicz's leadoff single with one of her own before a Caroline Videtto walk loaded the bases with no outs to lead to the eventual game-winning RBI from Gimpl, her fifth of the weekend.
UMass tied things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning as Kaycee Carbone reached safely on a one-out error prior to a Stavinoha double to the gap in left center that scored a pinch-running Videtto all the way from first.
Game Two - #8 Georgia 4, UMass 0 - Box Score
Kiara Oliver held the ranked Bulldogs without a run through the first four innings of a pitchers' duel, striking out seven batters including five through the first three innings. Oliver and the UMass defense kept Georgia off the board through the first three frames, leaving a Bulldog runner stranded at third before Savana Sikes' two RBI triple in a three-run fourth inning put the home team ahead 3-0.
UMass put together their best offensive opportunity in the following half inning after a pair of back-to-back singles from Melissa Garcia and Hannah Bunker opened up the top half of the fifth. Stacevicz walked to load the bases with two down before a groundout on a close play at first halted the scoring opportunity. Stacevicz added a single in the second game of the day to put her at 3-of-5 on the day.
Georgia added the fourth and final run of the contest in the bottom of the fifth to bring the score to a final 4-0.
