Softball Drops Doubleheader On Opening Day

February 15, 2019 | Softball

The Minutewomen return to the field on Saturday and Sunday for a pair of doubleheaders.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. The University of Massachusetts softball team dropped a pair of contests on opening day at the Diamond 9 Citrus Blossom on Friday afternoon, falling to Kansas 4-2 and LIU Brooklyn 9-5 in extra innings. The Minutewomen were led offensively by Kaitlyn Stavinoha and Kaycee Carbone, who each picked up five hits and scored a pair of runs.

Game One – Kansas 4, UMass 2 - Box Score
Solid defense from the Minutewomen in the opening innings against Kansas kept them off the board as the Jayhawks threatened to break the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second after a walk and a pair of singles to lead off the frame before three straight outs left the bases juiced.

Carbone started the 2019 campaign a perfect 4-of-4 at the plate, including a 3-of-3 showing against the Jayhawks in the season opener. The senior outfielder provided the first run of the contest in the top of the fourth inning with a home run to put UMass ahead 1-0.

Amy Smith walked in the second and final run for the Minutewomen in the top of the sixth inning with the bases loaded before an inning-ending double play left a pair stranded and the score 2-0.

Kiara Oliver kept Kansas off the board until their final at-bat in the sixth inning, striking out six batters while walking a pair in the loss. Kansas opened the inning with a single and a walk on their way to scoring four to secure the 4-2 win.

Game Two – LIU Brooklyn 9, UMass 5 (8) - Box Score
Carbone and Stavinoha jumpstarted the Minutewoman offense in game two, recording back-to-back singles in the first with two down to set up a Melissa Garcia single up the middle to put UMass ahead 1-0 before LIU Brooklyn tallied a pair in the top of the fourth to go ahead 2-1.

UMass quickly answered in the following half inning to tie it at 2-2, beginning with Stavinoha's second of three hits in the ballgame followed by a Garcia sacrifice bunt. Smith's second RBI of the day and only in the game came by way of a sacrifice fly to deep right field that was far enough back to bring in Stavinoha from third.

LIU Brooklyn used a two-run home run with two down to grab a 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth inning.

Erin Stacevicz started the seventh-inning rally with a one out bunt single before Jackie Kelley was hit-by-pitch to put multiple runners on for Carbone, who singled to shallow left center field load the bases. Stacevicz finished the second game of the day 2-of-4 with a run scored.

Stavinoha's second RBI of the contest was a sacrifice fly to left field that looked to be a multiple base hit before an extended grab by the left fielder allowed just one to come across to tie it up at 4-4.

The Blackbirds loaded the bases with no outs in the international tiebreak eighth inning prior to a sacrifice fly that scored the first of five runs to go along with three hits, an error and two left on base.

Danielle Ellis recorded her first collegiate hit and RBI to open up the bottom of the eighth, scoring a pinch-running Kristina Day from second base to bring the score to a final 9-5. Kendra Allen also picked up her first collegiate base hit in the inning, sending a pinch hit single up the middle with two down.

The Minutewomen return to the diamond tomorrow to take on Missouri at 11 a.m. and Troy at 1:30 p.m.
