Smith With The Stop
Senior goalie D.J. Smith made 76 saves over the opening seven games of the season, an average of 10.9 per game. He ranks 27th nationally for saves per game through play on Thurs., March 23. His 76 saves already more than double his career total entering the season (50). Smith made at least 10 in each of the opening six games this season.
Bogart Goes Buck-Wild
Tyler Bogart owns 13 points over the last three games on 11 goals and two assists during wins over No. 15 Yale, 11-9; UMass Lowell, 10-8 and Hartford, 12-10. Bogart has a team-high 15 goals on the year over 40 shots attempted (37.5 shot percentage). He has five multi-goal efforts over seven games played this year, including six as a starter on attack. His 15 goals are already more than his freshman year total (11) over 13 games.
Ike Likes Caused Turnovers
Sophomore long-stick midfielder and close defenseman Isaac Paparo has 14 caused turnovers in the opening seven games of the year - already eight more than the All-CAA Second Team and CAA All-Rookie Team honoree had as a freshman in 2016. He is tied for eighth nationally and is tied for first in the CAA for caused turnovers per game (2.000) through games on Thurs., March 23.
A Familiar Face On The Opposite Sideline
University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse faced a familiar opponent on Tues., March 7 with its trip to No. 15 Yale, which is led by former UMass assistant coach Andy Shay. From 2001-03, Shay assisted Greg Cannella in leading the Minutemen to 37 victories, three New England titles and a pair of ECAC championships. Shay filled roles that included recruiting coordinator and defensive coordinator. He departed the Minutemen for Yale following the 2003 season and is 113-79 at the helm of the Bulldog program with five Ivy League titles. The Minutemen downed Yale, 11-9 for the upset win in the first meeting between the teams since the 2010 season. The series between Cannella and Shay is evenly matched over the first eight meetings (2004-10, '17) at 4-4.
