Bagnall Nets Game Winner As Massachusetts Men's Lacrosse Defeats Hobart In 2OT, 13-12

April 18, 2026 | Men's Lacrosse

GENEVA, N.Y. – After not leading for 67 minutes and 15 seconds, University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse pulled out a 13-12 victory in double overtime at Hobart in Saturday afternoon. Freshman attack Thomas Bagnall scored the game winner with 45 seconds remaining in the second OT to lift UMass to 10-4 overall and 3-3 in Atlantic 10 play. Hobart falls to 2-10 and 0-4 with the loss.

Massachusetts has now secured double digit wins for the first time since 2019 in its first contest to reach multiple overtimes since defeating Drexel, 11-10, in 3OT in 2011.

Bagnall paced the Gorillas offense with his first career five-goal game and contributed three ground balls and one caused turnovers. Redshirt sophomore Dylan Johnson also put up five points on the day with four goals and an assist on the game-winning tally. Junior Charles Kurtz had three assists, freshman Colin Coyle scored twice and junior Zack Waxman contributed a goal and an assist. Senior Zach Auble logged three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

For Hobart, David Peterkin had a team-high five points on two goals and three assists and Rufus Robertson chipped in two goals and an assist for three points.

Peterkin opened the scoring at the 13:27 mark of the first with a man-up goal for the Statesmen and Bagnall countered for UMass 49 seconds later, knotting the score at one.

The Statesmen then closed out the first quarter with a 7-0 run to head into the second with an 8-1 advantage.

Senior Aiden Drunsic set up Matthew Cargiulo for the finish to end UMass' scoring drought with 13:33 remaining in the half. The tally sparked a three-goal run for the Gorillas that trimmed the deficit to 8-4. Hobart briefly pushed their advantage back to five at 9-4 before Bagnall and Johnson posted a pair of unassisted scores with 5:29 on the clock.

The Statesmen converted an extra man opportunity with 4:30 to play in the quarter, bringing their advantage to 10-6 at the intermission.

UMass continued to inch closer with goals from Bagnall and Coyle to begin the scoring in the third. Jack Moyle put Hobart back up by three at 11-8 at the 6:26 mark, but the Gorillas added the next two tallies to make it a one-goal game heading into the fourth.
Waxman tied the score for the first time since the opening quarter, netting his second of the season with 8:55 remaining in the fourth. Slade Engstrom gave the Statesmen back a one-goal edge at 7:34, but Kurtz set up Johnson for the equalizer with 2:22 in the fourth that ultimately forced overtime.

Hobart killed off one-minute slashing penalty in the first OT frame as the teams remained deadlocked at 12. Then, after UMass came up with a defensive stop with 1:36 left, Johnson found Bagnall in close for the finish on the next possession.

The Statesmen edged the Gorillas in shots, 49-48, and grabbed 37 ground balls to UMass' 32. Hobart went 2-for-3 in man-up opportunities, while the Gorillas were 0-for-3.

Sophomore Owen Salanger totaled 19 saves in the win for UMass, while the Statesmen's Elhanan Wilson registered 15 stops between the pipes.

The Gorillas will close out the regular season next Friday, April 24, in a neutral site non-conference matchup against No. 20 Penn at Farmingdale High School in Farmingdale, N.Y., at 5:30 p.m.
