Smith makes career-high 16 saves, Muller nets five points in 10-9 loss

HIGHLIGHTS
  • D.J. Smith made a single-game career high 16 saves and scooped up one groundball. He split his 16 saves evenly between the halves, with four made in the first and second quarters, five in the third and three in the fourth.
  • Dan Muller notched career highs of five points and three assists while he also scored twice and grabbed three groundballs.
  • Noah Rak won the facebook battle by a narrow margin, with 12 wins in 23 taken. He added a game-high seven groundballs.
  • Isaac Paparo scooped up four groundballs and caused three turnovers from his spot at close defense. 
  • The Minutemen earned more shots, 49-37, won the groundball battle, 41-34 and were a perfect 18-of-18 on clears.
 
FIRST QUARTER
Brown picked up a 4-3 lead through 15 minutes, led by a pair of scores from Luke McCaleb, including one that put the Bears in front with 29 seconds remaining in the quarter.
 
Massachusetts spread the offense to three Minutemen as Grant Consoletti, Ben Spencer and Jeffrey Trainor each converted in the first.
 
SECOND QUARTER
Tyler Bogart jumpstarted a three-goal run for the Maroon and White with his conversion at the 10-minute, 53 second mark of the second quarter. After Dan Muller fed Bogart for his goal, Muller provided back-to-back strikes spanning the second and third quarters for a 6-4 home margin.
 
THIRD QUARTER
The Minuteman defense created the halftime-spanning three-goal run as Massachusetts held Brown scoreless for 26:18 of game clock from the final minute of the first quarter through until Dylan Molly netted his lone goal of the game that cut the UMass lead to 6-5 with 4:11 to go in the third.
 
Trainor answered Molloy and bumped the Massachusetts lead back to two only for Jack Kniffin to answer for the Bears with 91 seconds to play in the third.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
Brown's offense synched in the fourth and the Bears notched a four-goal run spurred on by two tallies from Michael Panepinto. The rally pushed Brown in front, 9-7, after Panepinto's second of the game with 7:52 to go.
 
Bogart immediately breathed life into the Massachusetts offense with his second of the day and team-leading 17th of the year only 22 seconds later. Buddy Carr followed with his lone goal of the day at the 5:08 mark as the Minutemen forced overtime.
 
OVERTIME
Massachusetts won the opening faceoff and controlled play worked the ball around the Brown cage for a pair of looks at the game winner; however, a UMass turnover gave possession back to Brown. The Bears capitalized when Jack Kniffin won the contest with 1:12 left in overtime.
 
UP NEXT
The Minutemen open Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play against Delaware at home on Garber Field on Sat., April 1 at 1 p.m. The game will be available to watch free of charge via the UMass Sports Network.
