Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Falls To #3 Richmond In A-10 Semifinals, 11-7

RICHMOND, VA. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse was within three of No. 3 Richmond early in the fourth quarter, but the Spiders held on to defeat the Gorillas, 11-7, despite a stellar UMass defensive effort in Friday's Atlantic 10 Semifinal. Massachusetts ends its season at 10-6, while Richmond moves on to the Atlantic 10 title game at 13-1.
Freshman Thomas Bagnall had a hat trick for the Gorillas and sophomore Jack Turowsky had three points on two goals and an assist. Senior Zach Auble registered five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Aidan O'Neil paced Richmond with seven points on three goals and four assists while Joe Sheridan, Gavin Creo, Daniel Picart all had two goals apiece.
The Spiders built an early 3-0 lead with a pair from O'Neil and another from Jack Riccardi over the first 3:30 of the contest. Turowsky then put UMass on the board at the 6:49 mark of the first quarter.
O'Neil potted the next two tallies for Richmond with 4:05 left in the first and at the 9:07 mark of the second, part of a 3-0 run for the Spiders that stretched the advantage to 6-1.
Turowsky broke up the stretch with his second of the afternoon with 1:28 remaining in the second, but Creo beat the buzzer to push the Richmond lead back to five at 7-2 at the intermission.
Creo opened the second half scoring with 12:21 on the clock in the third before Bagnall netted his first of the day 2:03 later.
The Spiders briefly expanded their lead back to six before Bagnall responded with scores just 30 seconds apart.
The score remained 9-5 until freshman Colin Coyle made it three straight for UMass with his goal at the 12:47 mark of the fourth quarter. The Gorillas won the ensuing faceoff and had chances to trim their deficit to two, but the Richmond defense held firm and the Spiders scored on their next offensive possession.
Picart added another insurance tally for Richmond with 9:28 to play before junior Zack Waxman capped the scoring with 5:08 remaining.
Richmond ended the contest with a 38-229 advantage in shots and grabbed 32 ground balls to UMass' 24. The Gorillas were 0-for-1 on extra man opportunities but killed off all five man down situations they faced.
Sophomore Owen Salanger made 17 saves for UMass and Connor Knight turned aside 13 shots for the Spiders.
