Comeback Falls Short For Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse Against Penn In 13-11 Loss

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – University of Massachusetts men's lacrosse trimmed a six-goal second half deficit to two but was unable complete the comeback against Penn in a 13-11 loss at Howitt Middle School on Friday evening. The Gorillas wrap up the regular season at 10-5 overall, while the Quakers improve to 7-6.
Redshirt sophomore Dylan Johson led the UMass offense with four goals, senior Aiden Drunsic logged a goal and two assists for three points. Senior Zach Auble and junior Charles Kurtz had a goal and an assist apiece, while Auble also grabbed six ground balls and had three caused turnovers.
For Penn, Davis Provost finished with a game-best six points on three goals and three assists. Ben Beacham (1g, 2a) and Grayson McClements (2g, 1a) contributed three points apiece, Alex Martin scored twice and Griffin Scane had a goal and an assist.
Johnson gave UMass a 1-0 lead with 5:57 to go in the opening quarter before the Quakers rattled off the next six in the contest. Two more from Johnson 40 seconds apart in the second started a 3-0 stretch for the Gorillas, but Provost netted two to end the half, including a buzzer beater, to give Penn a 9-4 advantage at the break.
Penn added the first two tallies of the third quarter, including a man-up goal from Travis Smith that gave the Quakers their largest lead, six, at 10-4 with 12:16 remaining
UMass responded with a 3-0 run to halve its deficit, before trading goals with Penn to bring the score to 11-8 heading to the fourth.
The Gorillas had an answer for Penn's first two goals in the final frame and Auble closed the gap to two with 3:37 remaining, but UMass was unable to convert on its final two possessions.
UMass finished the evening with a 35-34 shot advantage and went 2-for-3 on extra man opportunities, while the Quakers were 1-for-1.
Owen Salanger totaled 11 saves for the Gorillas and Jack Pelot turned aside 10 in between the pipes for Penn.
UMass will await the official seeding announcement for the Atlantic 10 Championship, which begins next Thursday, April 30, in Richmond, Virginia.
