No. 2 Richmond Runs Past Massachusetts Men’s Lacrosse 21-7

AMHERST, Mass. – Redshirt sophomore Dylan Johnson gave UMass a 1-0 lead at the 13:22 mark of the first quarter, but No. 2 Richmond managed the next two tallies and did not trail the rest of the way to hand Massachusetts a 21-7 setback at Garber Field on Saturday afternoon. The loss leaves the Gorillas at 7-3 on the year, while the Spiders improve to 8-0.

Sophomore Robbie Granara ended the day with four goals for UMass and added an assist for a team-high five points. Junior Matthew Cargiulo and freshman Thomas Bagnall added two assists apiece. Sophomore Jack Turowsky logged his 20th goal of the season, stretching his scoring streak to 10 straight to begin the year. Senior Zach Auble collected three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

For Richmond, Aidan O'Neil led the way with seven points on three goals and four assists, while Lucas Littlejohn chipped in four goals and an assist for five points. Daniel Picart registered a hat trick and an assist for four points, while three additional Spiders, Joe Sheridan (1g, 2a), Jack Ricciardi (2g, 1a) and Leo Caine (1g, 2a), had three points apiece.

Sheridan opened the scoring for Richmond with 12:43 on the clock in the first and O'Neil gave the squad its first lead just 42 seconds later. Granara briefly tied things up at 2-2 before the Spiders broke the game open with an 8-0 run.
UMass converted man-up opportunities twice before halftime with Adian Drunsic and Granara collecting the tallies, but Richmond opened the third quarter with a 4-0 stretch.

The Spiders out-shot the Gorillas 45-22 and corralled 46 ground balls to UMass' 23. Massachusetts went 2-for-3 in man-up opportunities and Richmond was 1-for-4.

UMass will be back in action next Saturday, March 28, when the squad travels to St. Bonaventure for a 12 p.m. Atlantic 10 matchup.
