Massachusetts Men’s Larosse Secures 9-7 Win At St. Bonaventure

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – After sophomore Jack Turowsky tied the score at 1-1 with 8:34 remaining the first, Massachusetts men's lacrosse never trailed the rest of the way to secure a 9-7 win over St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon. The victory moves the Gorillas to 8-3 on the season, 1-2 in the Atlantic 10, while the Bonnies drop to 4-6 and 0-2 in conference action.
Turowsky ended the day with a team-best four points for UMass on two goals and two assists, while freshman Thomas Bagnall registered a hat trick, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior Aiden Drunsic logged three points on a goal and two assists, while junior Charles Kurtz (2g), sophomore Tyler Clayton (2a) and sophomore Robbie Granara (1g, 1a) had two points apiece. Senior Zach Auble corralled a career high eight ground balls and caused three turnovers.
Jaxon Dillon was the lone Bonnie to post multiple points on the day as he finished with three on a goal and two assists. Owen Tasse chipped in with five ground balls and five caused turnovers.
Dillon opened the scoring at the 13:59 mark of the first for St. Bonaventure's only lead of the day before Turowsky and Bagnall followed with tallies at 8:34 and 3:56, respectively. Patrick Shanahan then added the second of the day for the Bonnies in the final minute of the opening quarter to level the score at 2-2 heading into the second.
Kurtz and Bagnall provided tallies for UMass just 52 seconds apart to put UMass in front by a pair with 12:03 remaining in the opening half, only to be countered by goals from Cole Kucinski and Blake Maracle, which tied things up once more at 4-4. Drunsic and Kurtz responded for the Gorillas in the final 3 minutes of the half to give Massachusetts a 6-4 advantage at the intermission.
Bagnall completed his hat trick with a man-down goal in the opening minute of the third and Turnowsky converted with the man up for UMass at the 1:24 mark for the only goals of the third quarter.
St. Bonaventure made one final push at a comeback with a 3-0 run to start the fourth, closing the gap to 8-7, but Granara added insurance for the Gorillas with 3:20 to play, netting his 24th goal of the season.
UMass out-shot St. Bonaventure 44-28 and went 1-for-2 on man-up opportunities and killed off all three man-down situations on the day. Sophomore Owen Salanger totaled 11 saves for the Gorillas, while Isaac Farmer had 16 stops for the Bonnies.
Massachusetts will be back in action next Saturday, April 4, when the squad will play host to No. 15/16 Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m. on Garber Field.
