Baseball Swept By Dayton In Doubleheader

The Minutemen and Flyers face off for game three on Sunday, April 6, at 12 p.m. on ESPN+.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball dropped the doubleheader on Friday afternoon to Dayton at Earl Lorden Field. Dayton claimed a 14-6 win in game one, before winning 9-1 in game two of the day.

UMass moved to 9-15-1 overall on the season and 3-8 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while Dayton improved to 16-17 overall with a 6-5 league record.

Massachusetts and Dayton match up in the series finale on Sunday, April 6 at 12 p.m. on EPSN+.

Matt Travisano and Gavin O'Brien led the production with two hits each, including a double from O'Brien. Four Minutemen followed with one hit apiece, which included a two-run double from Carter Hanson. Hanson led the team with two RBI, while Travisano, Jack Beverly and O'Brien contributed one each.

UMass quickly took the lead in the opening frame. Three straight singles loaded up the bases with Beverly stepping up to the plate. Anthony Tirado touched home plate to make room for Beverly after he was walked to give the Minutemen a 1-0 lead. Hanson doubled to right field to drive in Travisano and Braden Sullivan, before Beverly scored on a passed ball to put Massachusetts ahead, 4-0.

Dayton scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the third inning, making it a 4-1 contest. The Flyers added another run to cut UMass' lead to two with a solo home run in the fourth.

Massachusetts pushed across a run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Travisano to score O'Brien to extend its leads to 5-2.

Dayton tacked on five runs in the seventh. The Flyers got back within two on an RBI single, before back-to-back home runs, including a three-run homer, to take a 7-5 lead. Dayton added to its lead with a three-run long ball in the top of the eighth to pull ahead 10-5.

Four more runs in the top of the ninth for the Flyers pulled them ahead 14-5. The Minutemen tacked on one in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI single from O'Brien, but Dayton was able to come away with a 14-6 win in game one of the day.

Bobby McDonough (0-2) had the loss for Massachusetts, tossing 0.2 innings with four runs on three hits and a walk. Bennett LaPalm (5-1) earned the winning decision for Dayton, allowing no runs, no hits, a walk and striking out one in 1.1 innings of work.

Travisano registered a team-leading three hits, with Tirado, Sullivan and Hanson recording one hit each. Tirado scored the lone run for the Minutemen, while Beverly tallied the RBI.

Dayton got on the board first with a solo homer in the opening frame, before adding two in the second. A leadoff homer for the Flyers pushed them ahead 4-0 in the fourth.

Dayton tacked on two more in the sixth and three in the seventh to make it a 9-0 contest. UMass scored its first run of game two in the eighth on a ground out, making it a 9-1 game.

Both team's defenses held strong in the final inning, as the Flyer won 9-1.

Callen Powers (2-1) took the loss for UMass, allowing six runs on nine hits, five walks and dealing four strikeouts in 5.2 innings. J.J. Gatti (3-3) had the win for Dayton, going 5.1 innings with no runs, three hits, three walks and four strikeouts. Jackson Judy earned the save for the Flyers, giving up one run on three hits and walking three in 3.2 innings of work.
